Should Reading change our club crest...

by Reading4eva » 26 May 2013 10:12

All the uproar across Everton & Port Vale about changing there club crests has got me thinking. Everton said their old crest was badly represented on TV, tablets and in computer games. It was also difficult to replicate, which led to a change. The Everton fans are not fans of this of course, and have already kicked off as reported in newspapers.

Their CEO has a point though, and it led to me thinking about Reading's crest. The wording is hard to see when the image is too small. Also the lion and the crown are difficult to see.

How about making a shield (in respect to our old crests), with a blue and white hooped background with Reading at the top and 1871 at the bottom, with a lion with a ball at its feet and crown on its head in the middle. Would be more of a brand than our current logo? Discuss!

No... But something more of a brand. The maiwand lion should take pride of place. It is the symbol of Reading after all. Palace have a new logo for next season too

Would you not say though that its not so much a brand logo, unlike Man United, Arsenal and even Wigan's logo?

The crest is one of the few things I think Reading FC have designed right.

Am I right in thinking that when the current crest was introduced, there was a choice of designs and a vote/opinion poll in the paper?

Does anyone have pictures of what the alternative designs were?

Quite like our badge, much better than quite a few others in the Championship. I think the best ones are quite elaborate shields like Newcastle and Liverpool, although the recent Spurs badge does the job nicely too.

I like it and I don't think there is any reason to change it.

Maybe we can get JayRoyal to pump out a few designs!

On a related note, and purely based on design rather than feelings towards the team, what are your favourite club badges in football?

I like the snarling lion of Millwall

and the horse of Ipswich

The current crest was designed by a fan. I think the club asked fans to send their drawings in. To be honest, the badge is OK. I am old fashioned though and prefer older school designs. Focusing on The Maiwand Lion in the centre, with perhaps a ribbon below. I'm not a fan of the rounded badges.

Actually Cov's is a good one.

Now that I think about it the Millwall badge has almost ripped off the Maiwand lion, the thieving pikey bastards.

Hated that. The trees looked like fat ladies! I agree with Sparta and the Forbury Lion.

As I heard it, when the club put up all those options that were basically derivative of the millwall lion badge above, a fan who is also a graphic designer wrote to SJM to say they could do better, he replied and said 'prove it'. Which is how the current badge came into being (after many iterations...) anyway, that creative agency have been working with the club ever since on some of their stuff
