What a silly question.

The 'Mad Stad' should have been built 40 years earlier. 8)

Dave_Kitson What a silly question. Yeh but very plausible on here.

Yes it very much was.

A stadium opened without any kind of credible road network has to be questioned.

In 1998, the A33 bypass wasn't even finished...folk seem to forget the dirt tracks and the 2 hour queues (with crowds of 7 to 11k).

I doubt that this is enhancing the point that the OP is trying to make...but, so what

No, of course it wasn't. We could have done with it four years sooner in fact.

I think we should have waited a couple of weeks to open it. Probably the Burnley match would have been better, would have answered the long time question as well.

I expect that very little provision was made for access to/from the stadium, as it was probably assumed that the fans would exit the stadium and then continuously walk around it in a loop for 14 days until the next home fixture.

With the benefit of hindsight, there are things that could have been done better or differently - Examples of these things are:

- closer to town
- more easily expandable (I.e. Provision to add a 'bolt on' second tier without disruption to existing stand.
- better transport links (closer to rail line)
- in an area with more to do before the game
- easier conversion to safe standing (if it ever happens). Swansea is a great example of this, with a surrounding lower tier which could accommodate standing fans if legislation permits.
- more flexible away end partitioning
- deeper concourses

Although, if we were building the stadium now, I'm sure it would have cost a lot more than the £40m or so it cost, and I doubt we could realistically have acquired a site for much less money than was paid in the Madstad's case, which if I recall correctly, was £1 with an agreement to develop the A33 for £7m or so.

In terms of potential other sites, I guess Kings Meadow or Battle Hospital would have been closer to town, both of which now house Tesco superstores.

In fairness, I don't think we went for the location because the club thought the fans would love nothing better than to trek to the arse end of an industrial estate once every two weeks. I was probably the only viable site on offer.

probably my biggest beef with it tbh (aside from the shocking atmosphere obv)

A football club should be there to service the town, if that is the case why build it in such a bad place and then after that provide limited transport and parking there (I am aware that the answer here is £££ by the way)

The biggest question for me here, and perhaps the OP can help with this, is how has stadia technology moved on over the last decade?

What features could we expect to see in a fictional Mad Stad due to open in 2018 :?:

In the 15 years or so since we moved in, what has actually happened in that time to improve spectator comfort? The concourses are still drab and cramped.

I agree, a few soft furnishings would go a long way.
