The half time forkers

by Winston Biscuit » 23 Feb 2019 18:00

10 (TEN) of them. Ever so gently tapping the ground in a casual manner, at HT, but only for the last 3 or 4 minutes of it, only in one area of the pitch each game.

What's that about? What other job do they have? Is their a chief forker among them?

Related to one of them (thanx +/- for the freebies nephew)

Most of them work at the training ground during the week and some are local Sunday league footballers....part of their duties are/were to play in training games etc.

They basically like a chat, so that’s why they gravitate to the same area, that, and the drainage issues etc.

The wages are sh1t btw (but they get freebies)

You're probably not in it for the pay, tbf, but for the experience. Get a couple of seasons of that under your belt, then you'd be looking at a full time groundsman position. And after that, who knows?

Anecdotally, I know of a couple of head groundsman who started out as forkers.

It's a far cry from Gordon Neate tearing around Elm Park like a man possessed urgently hammering divots back into the turf.

"Gordon's got his fork out, Gordon's got his fork out, na na na na na....."
