Tony Le Mesmer Why should we serve a minutes silence just because a football match is about to start?

What happened on 9/11 has absolutely nothing to do with football.

Its nothing to do with football, but shows respect for those that were killed.

What is wrong with that??

A great club legend like Maurice Evans dies, minutes silence is justified. A terrorist act in a country, no way should football have to have a minutes silence. I'll be out in the concourse drinking a beer and talking thank you

I will be too busy booing those talking and drinking in the concourse to have a minutes silence. Those around me will be too busy telling me to desist to have their own minutes silence. I am begining to think that perhaps a minutes silence is not such a good idea.

It's not a minutes silence for each person that died on 911!

Unless you wish to mourn the terrorists that would take you 49 hours and 33 minutes.

Avon Royal Move on.

Tell that to the government, and Bush for that matter.

Personally, I have no objection. Whatever one thinks of the Bush government, or our involvement in Iraq, the attack on the WTC was a pretty horrendous and traumatic event. (I tried to watch the French documentary last weekend, and had to turn the channel over when it reached the point where the firemen in the lobby could hear the jumpers crashing into the lobby entrance outside.) Britons died at the WTC, and Britons are dying in Afghanistan and Iraq now, so probably there are people all over the country who know sombody who has been effected by the attack on the WTC or the events that followed it.

If we have a minute's silence, I will observe it, but I won't go out of my way to mark the event on Monday. I don't think that observing the silence needs to be understood as an endorsement for neo-con policies, anymore than opposing the wars in Afganistan and Iraq could have been interpreted as support for Al-Qaeda.

Edit: Ooo look, 911 posts! I wasn't even conscious of that! Spooky...

It's false. False respect is worse than no respect IMHO. Most stay silent because they feel obliged to and out of fear of being verbally and possibly physically abused for choosing not to pause for thought at that precise moment in time. During a minutes silence for a cause they don't care about I suspect many are busy thinking about whether to have a chicken balti pie or a hotdog at half time or sending a text to their mates. The vast majority of us have shown respect and have moved on, we may choose to spend some time thinking about 9/11 and may even choose to show respect but on our own terms.

If you go to a funeral or memorial you go with the intention of showing respect, If you go to a football match you go because you want to watch a game of football.

Minutes silences should be picked for the occasion, If it's relevent and/or timely then it will be welcomed. In the case of 9/11, at the time it was in everyone's thoughts so a minutes silence at the game held on the very day was appropriate.... although I can't remember if we had one or not.

If a random plane crashes today somewhere outside of Berkshire with 100 people not connected to the club killed we shouldn't hold a minutes silence, If one of the passengers who lost their life was a Reading player we should. Reason being because it's appropriate.

After the tragic death of Matt Gadsby, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we DID have a minute's silence at the game now.

There is no need for a minute silence at the game tomorrow, absolutely not. There is no relevance to the event tomorrow to warrent a minutes silence.
