This isn't an anti American thing as I'd object to having a minutes silence at football for 7/7 as well.

Don't really understand people's opposition to them. Stand still in silence for 60 seconds - hardly a big deal, and it lets those who want to reflect to do so. As has been mentioned, there are likely to be 4 Americans on the field who want to.

Can they not reflect on the fifth anniversary events of September 11th 2001 in the twenty hours leading up to kick off then?

These days you get a minutes silence at football matches if a Hedgehog gets run over on Rushey Way. We are obsessed with being in a constant state of mourning in this country.

Thomas L'Heureux Surely we don't want to give our fans an excuse to be silent?!

To be fair, the noise just after the minute silence finishes is quite impressive.

Like I said, I don't understand why anyone would object. Be silent for a minute - what's the problem? We're not five years old.

can't you have your minute silence before the game? why have to make everyone silent just so you can remember something?

"Minute silences are so over-used now that they've lost their impact."
agreed

My thoughts on the issue of minute silences are well-documented.

No, it would be toe-curling.

If followed by "Ole" "Ole" "Ole" . . Convey ... then it would also be the fans showing respect for their USA players.

bre I don't think that there was a minutes silence at the WH game as I recall as I thought that we would have one

There was a minute's silence before the West Ham game.

Definitely.

Readingfanman Will there be a minutes silence before the Macnhester City game does anybody think as a mark of the 5 year anniversary of 9/11?

I very much expect so.

Has anyone heard anything 'official' about this?
Is it really almost 5 years ago.

It would show unity with America, no-one else.

I would not have thought that there would be a minutes silence.

Why should we serve a minutes silence just because a football match is about to start?

What happened on 9/11 has absolutely nothing to do with football.

The problem is that there can only ever be one answer to the question "Shall we have a minute's silence" and that answer is "Yes". The only way to avoid it is not to ask the question.

Not quite sure what Maguire's well documented views are but I imagine they're the same as mine.

(Incidentally, I also don't really understand why everyone is talking about the US players potentially on view. It was after all also the largest ever loss of British life due to terrorism.)
