URZZZZ Rumoured team of:

Pickford
Walker
Stones
Mings
Trippier
Rice
Phillips
Mount
Foden
Sterling
Kane

Risky from Southgate - could backfire hugely with Trippier (at LB), Mings, Phillips and Sterling in

Happy from midfield up - Phillips to nullify Modric makes sense. But the backline is a car crash if true.

I really hope not.

The standout issue there is Sterling who is so woefully out of form.
At least there's a case for Walker and Tripper compared to James and Chilwell/Shaw, and if we're definitely going with two CDM's then at least Phillips is fit (as opposed to Henderson)

If it is that way, then Grealish on for Sterling after 60 minutes - and we never look back (I hope)

Stone's never convinces me unless he has Diaz next to him. God knows what he is like with the Villa thug next to him.
I wouldn't have taken Stirling either. Shocking form and hopeless finisher.
How Tarkowski has been overlooked when England are claiming a lack of talent at cenreback is beyond me....

I support Sterling's inclusion despite a difficult season. Kane, Mount and Foden need someone who will run in behind and make space, and Sterling will do that tirelessly. You could argue that Sancho is more deserving on current form, but Sterling has never let Southgate down and has played alongside Kane in this system far more often.

It's not unheard of for players to find form at a major tournament. Iniesta in 2010 came off the back of his worst domestic season. Shearer's form before Euro 96 not great either.

Southgate at the World cup seemed more offensive and positive, now he just seems like Hodges on, Capello and Erikson. Boring and safe.

Don't mind Trippier but we have two (three if you include Saka) LB's on the bench - don't get it

Sancho and Chilwell the two players omitted from the squad

Injury related? Surely Sancho would have to be on the bench if not? Can understand Chilwell out with Shaw and Saka available.

Mings is my concern. Accident waiting to happen. White is less experienced but is simply better.

Not apparent there’s an injury problem

Sancho been distinctly average most games in an England shirt but still quite harsh - two GK’s on the bench is unnecessary IMO

Mings and Phillips is a worry.

With VAR Mings is likely to get caught out on some thuggery and Phillips was just an empty shirt in the friendly I saw.

Can live with everything else.

Ridiculous team selection on the face of it but will happily eat my words if we get a win.

Mings worries the oxf*rd out of me, bearly Championship level.

This is pathetic.

The guy who has been MOTM in his last 6 appearances is dropped for a guy woefully out of form.

Just what I predicted but still makes no sense.

Phillips and Mings aren’t good enough for starting games in tournament football.

I despair.

Let’s see how I feel at 4pm. Maybe I’ve got it all wrong and Southgate will prove me the know-nothing. 8)

Croatia 3-1.

Still one of the brightest in the team, but they've all slowed down.

Similar to the World Cup game......England start brightly, then Croatia just work their way into the game.

Still all over them

Midfield and up front working well
As usual we don’t look so comfortable in defence. Walker and Mings look like they’re capable of mistakes at any moment
