Your facing a 0 out of 4 there Zip.

France would be the best bet out of that lot but I think Italy look strong and Germany seem to have found form a bit after a terrible last world cup.
I thought Wales more than matched France til the sending off.....and even with 10 men we opened up that back line a couple of times. A better finisher would have punished them. I think that's their weakness.

As for England....last 8 at best. They will have to beat one of they big boys....which they never do. Remember Kane and Rashford arnt a Vokes or HRK.....they can do it in the big games. :D

One for you Ascot. Elis James Football Nation on iPlayer on the history of Wales national team. So many painful memories etched in my memory starting with the bent East German referee when we played the second leg of the European Championship quarter final with Yugoslavia in 1976 having won our group.
Then the Joe Jordan handball in the winner takes all WC qualifier v Scotland at Anfield in 77.
Onto the agonising goal so late on that cost us qualification for the Euros in 84
Then the bloody Scots again in the crucial final qualifier in 85 with another dodgy penalty.

The pain continues with Bodin’s penalty hitting the bar in the winner takes all WC qualifier v Romania in 93. Then the Euro play off defeat to the Russians and just when there was some optimism returning to the national team the passing of Gary Speed. We were at his last game a 4-1 win v Norway.

When I look at all the crucial pens involving Wales and Reading over the years in the massive matches both have always missed them and the opposition have always scored. Every. Bloody. Time.

See my post below yours my darling. My boys have qualified. That’s all I care about. I was there when they did. After 40 years of misery it means something to me.

England as tournament runners up with one of France, Germany or Portugal most likely waiting for them if they win their group

England’s best bet IMO is to somehow contrive to not win the group, qualify in 2nd and get one of Spain, Poland, Slovakia or Sweden. Don’t get me wrong there’s nothing more I’d like to see than winning the group then “crush” one of France, Germany or Portugal but given their previous record it just isn’t very likely.

Here’s hoping Hungary somehow upset the apple cart.

Prediction - Wales will not finish in the top 2 in their group, in fact I am tempted to say they will finish bottom

If Turkey are as strong as you alluded to yesterday, then that is quite the possibility.

Is the football fever in the UK this Euro tournament about the same as always or somewhat more subdued due to Covid? It certainly seems to be less fevered here (apart from the football themed ads which are as annoying as ever), maybe its because the Dutch nation expects less.

France are very strong, but I'd give us a decent chance against Germany or Portugal. I wouldn’t say our current team is a continuation of old English clichés; they won a world cup penalty shootouts out, they've put in decent performances against big sides in the Nations League. The team is full of players from Liverpool, City and Chelsea with experience of playing in and winning big matches. If we have a last 16 tie against Germany or Portugal, I'd put us at about 50/50 to get through.

I am holidaying in Pemprokeshire this summer and will eat a lot of welsh cakes when I am there, if that helps balance things out!

I was actually thinking this yesterday and came to the conclusion that London is a bit more subdued than I would've thought it would be. Think it would be a right laugh with loads of fans from other nations here. Remember when a German team, thank it was Köln, came over to play Arsenal. There were 1000s of fans all over London and really had a party atmosphere.

We’ve been discussing the qualification rules and have come to two conclusions:

1. They’re crap
2. Refer to conclusion number 1

Any team winning just one game is almost certain to qualify for the knockout rounds
A team gaining just ONE point has a reasonable chance of qualifying.
They would need to simply beat the goal difference of the team they’ve drawn with (i.e. not lose by as many against the better teams in the group). Then, it’s reasonably likely that the whipping boys in each group lose all three and hey presto

Some real crap is going to make it to the knockout.
Yet if England manage to win their group they get Germany, France or Portugal (or Hungary  )

I’m in favor of the smaller WC and Euros, I think it’s a travesty to the tournament that they let crappy nations in. Sure it might make the people of a country like Moldova or wales excited for the three games before they get knocked out but what does it really add? Greece won the Euro being an underdog, it wasn’t impossible, but let’s the save the qualifiers for the crap teams and let the cream of the crop in the finals.

The 76 one was painful. We did the hard bit away on an absolutely terrible pitch. The referee was an utter disgrace in the home leg and I remember the bottles raining down on the Yugoslav bench. They were a horrible lot.
78 was the most pain I've experienced with football, Reading an all included. Poor Terry went to the grave before that Scottish filth admitted he had handled it.
How I cheered Peru and Iran in that World Cup.
Then the tartan bastards gets that decision in 85......
As for Bodin, never understood why he took it. All those penalty takers on the pitch and they let him take it......I was there that night. Close to 78 in pain but we masterminded our own downfall that evening.
TBH the Russia playoff never surprised me result wise. We really were heading for our lowest ebb after that.
All credit goes to John Toshak. To clear out the entire senior squad (the likes of Savage etc) and promote the U23 team as the first team and the U21s to the U23s and so on was a master stroke. Sadly the results cost him his job but long term we got back on our feet.

If there's one set of results I'm desperate to see.....it's that England put at least 6 past the cheats and they finish bottom with a goal difference of -15 and they don't qualify again for another 25 years.

My mate had a T-shirt with Iran sewn into it for the 78 WC. He wore it in PE and was promptly dismissed to the changing room. I think 85 and 93 were more painful for me. Up there and alongside Bolton in 95.

Agree about Toshack. He did a good job and is at least recognised for it these days. As for Scotland it’s a long time ago but I may never see Wales in a World Cup Finals and that pisses me off especially when I recall Jordan’s clenched fist after his cheating was rewarded. That clip still gets my blood pressure rising.
