Ascotexgunner
Old Man Andrews Bale injured again. Bloke is made of extremely weak glass.

Not just Bale, but Ramsay and Brooks as well. It hurts us so much in these big games. They are the biggest talents we have.
There is a lot of excellent young talent coming through for us but we need those big players for that moment of magic in the big games.
We would have gone to the World Cup in Russia if all our players had been fit in the playoff games.
This whole campaign for Euro 2020 has been ropey with injuries. I fear we may fall short in last two games that we should win.

Bale’s not injured. He had cramp. He now has 81 caps and 33 goals. Where would we be without him? Ramsey needs to sort himself out. Badly missed.

stealthpapes But they won't even know four of the countries involved before the draw.

That's my favourite part

Euros and to some extent the World Cup I think are becoming farcical with far too many places available in the finals

To me it’s daft that it’s now virtually impossible for any of the leading sides to fail to qualify for the finals and the qualifying groups are becoming utterly irrelevant for anyone half decent so long as they remember to turn up for games

Should be 16 places for the Euro finals and if one of the supposed better countries fails win/finish 2 in their qualifying group (depending on group size) then tough

Issue of both fraction and the distribution of country quality. Too many very weak sides and the finals are a farce.

UEFA has 55 nations, of which 24 qualify. That 24th nation is, currently, Russia in 42nd.

That does start to look like its 'too low'

Well, there we have it. UEFA confirm that they don't give a shit about racism in football. Bulgaria's punishment for the scenes at this month's qualifier is to play two games behind closed doors (with one game suspended, for next time it happens) and a fine of £64k.

Which is actually a greater punishment than is mandated....

England were fined for their supporters failing to respect the Bulgarian national anthem and Bulgaria also for their fans failing to respect the English national anthem

Which sums have the paltry nature of UEFA's 'fight' against racism. In monetary terms, they care more about sponsored boxer shorts.

A bit late to throw them out of this competition with only the one game still to play.
The fine of £64,000 doesn't seem a lot but if you add the takings from the one game to be played behind closed doors, let's say 40,000 at £25, the effective fine is in excess of £1,000,000.

Incidentally does anybody know the history for when Bulgaria have played other European countries that tend to include black players such as Holland, Belgium or France or African countries that have all black players?

I don't think even a million quid is really a good reflection on UEFA's supposed stance against racism.

It is still a damn sight more than the headline derisory figure of £64,000.
Bearing in mind that the average wage in Sofia is less than a quarter of ours £1,000,000 there is the equivalent of around £4,000,000 here so hardly peanuts and money often talks in both a positive and negative way.
An FA so much poorer than ours will surely take notice.

It strikes me as a reasonable stance-what else should they be doing?

I tend to agree with those who said that it was right for the players to carry on to demonstrate that they are above the nonsense and are to be applauded for doing so.

Hitting their pockets even harder - or at least formally threatening to. It's more that I want to see a clear pathway to a tougher stance, much in the way the on-pitch protocol on dealing with this now does*.

For me, I'd have a formal three-strike rule - first instance, part-stadium closure, second instance - two games played behind closed doors, third instance - expulsion from the current (or if between tournaments, the next) UEFA tournament. I'd also ban fans of the country attending away matches for the duration of any journey through this process.

Something needs to focus the minds of countries where this stuff perpetuates football so readily, to the extent that the Bulgarian manager, goalkeeper, and most of its ruling body, made remarks totally opposite to the values decent society holds against racism.

Meanwhile, Hristo Stoichkov was in tears on TV in Mexico during the game, where he is a pundit.

*albeit if it isn't used, as in the second half of the Bulgaria game, then it is pointless.

They have been racist incidents at other Bulgaria games.

https://edition.cnn.com/2013/01/08/spor ... index.html

Denmark's Patrick Mtiliga was subject to racist abuse from Bulgaria fans during a match in October.

It's not even the first time with England, ffs

Qualifiers so far and their groups if a host nation:

England (Group D)
Belgium
Italy (Group A)
Russia (Group B)
Poland
Ukraine
Spain (Group E)
Turkey
France
Czech Republic

England I think have been guaranteed 3 Home games as they have qualified automatically, Scotland may qualify but will have 2 home games - first game will be on 14th June 2020.

Iceland I think now guaranteed a play-off spot in League A play-offs.

Georgia, Kosovo and Belarus guaranteed a League D play off berth likely joined by North Macedonia.

Scotland also guaranteed a spot in League C play off.

Luxembourg out of course, but they only lost 3-2 away to Serbia last night. Should have equalised too, and Serbia were hanging on in the end.
