have the finals tended to be the best 2 teams? certain a France Vs Brazil final would feel that way

YorkshireRoyal99 I think most English fans would accept losing to France, providing it's not an absolute drubbing like 3-0, but I don't think it will be.

I dunno, losing to a rampant Mbappe hattrick will be far easier to take that a scrappy 1-0 with Giroud shinning one in from 6 yards via a deflection off Maguire's backside.

Mr Angry
windermereROYAL So it`s France, Portugal (probably) and Brazil or Argentina (likely) in the final, nobody said it would be easy

Unless Morocco cause an upset it is likely to be the best European team versus the best South American team in the final.

Think the Netherlands have a chance against Argentina, they haven't impressed me that much. Brazil will be a step too far though.

Until Croatia made the final think there have only been about 6/7 teams in the final since we won it

France
Argentina
Germany
Netherlands
Italy
Brazil
Spain

Have there been any tenuous world cup omens for the England team yet?

The last time we won it was on home soil

Without checking I'd say it's likely we ruled it for a bit...making it another tournament on home soil

last time we won it was a double-digit 66, this year is also a double-digit year

hard to remember who were the best 2 at the time, but off the top of my head I would say the losing teams in the 2018 and 2010 finals were not the 2nd best teams in the world at the time

yes, those are the 2 I am talking about

Spain & France were the best teams in the world when they won. The teams they beat in those finals were not the 2nd best teams in the world

6ft Kerplunk Also, two days without matches then two matches on Friday and Saturday. Is that normal scheduling?

Yep, did the same in Russia.

Slightly odd that England and France have the Saturday 7pm slot having both played last Sunday – 5 days rest, whilst Portugal and Morocco play Saturday 3pm with both having playing yesterday – 3 days rest. Particularly tough on Morocco given they had extra-time too.

You'd have thought we should really be playing on Friday not Saturday too.

On the plus side, we can claim to have come 5th

Much like my 3rd Place finish over LUX in the music comp

In a major blow to England Paul Pogba's Witchdoctor has said he "was never asked to cast a spell on Kylian Mbappe."

Surprised FIFA don't introduce a World Plate tournament for competition between those teams that lose in the last 8 esp. as it's the sort of thing UEFA does in its competitions.

Mr Angry As for England, we have reached the level our World ranking - 5th - suggested we would get to; IF we beat France then we would have over achieved.

Its a bit of a free hit against France for the team, lose and its kind of expected based on current form\ranking but that should hopefully give us a bit of freedom to go for it. I'd be surprised if Southgate carried on after this World Cup anyway (unless we win it) so he may feel going out in a blaze of glory is worth the risk and would certainly surprise France.

Yeah agree with that, I think most English fans would accept losing to France, providing it's not an absolute drubbing like 3-0, but I don't think it will be. If we turn them over, we've done better than expected but knowing many English fans, there would be a level of expectation for us to suddenly win the tournament then.

I just want us to select a team and play in a style that shows real intent - and start off the game that way rather than the cautious beginnings we have seen of late.

We CAN score more goals than them if we play on the front foot, utilising our stengths. If we sit back and try to nullify France (which has been Southgate's failing in the past) it's very unlikely to work. Our defence is not good enough to soak up French pressure for extended periods.

Focus on our own strengths, not theirs.

For sure, we need a plan for handling Mbappe but not to the extent that we can't play our own game.

France v England Combined 11

Pickford; Trippier, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Bellingham, Henderson, Rice; Saka, Kane, Foden, Rashford

Lloris; Kounde, Varane, Upamecano, Hernandez; Tchouameni, Rabiot; Dembele, Griezmann, Mbappe, Giroud.

I'm gonna stick with 433

GK: Pickford
RB: Walker (over Kounde (CB))
CB: Varane
CB: Upamecano
LB: Shaw
CM: Tchouameni
CM: Bellingham
AM: Griezmann
LW: Mbappe
ST: Kane
RW: Saka

Foden very unlucky to have Mbappe and Griezman in his positions

Alot is being made of Mbappe etc - but english based champions league teams have dealt with him and its about an even split on players if you were combining the team. Happy to be classed as underdogs for this, but we have a chance, dont we?

Mbappe looks properly up for this World Cup though. His pace causes even the best defenders problems and our defence always looks vulnerable against it, especially if you run at our centrebacks. Even Walker didn't look at top speed the other night as he's still coming back to full fitness.

Considering France don't have their first choice midfield and England do, then personally I think England are favourites. If Pogba and Kante were there then I'd say France were more likely. Not convinced with Rabiot or Tchuoameni against the England midfield.

Maguire and Stones will have a far easier time dealing with Giroud than they would dealing with Benzema.
