World Cup Pundits

Dion Dublin with an early placeholder for not knowing the laws of the game

Ecuador goal disallowed for offside because, in the build up, an Ecuador player only had one defender between him and the goal because he’d gone beyond the goalkeeper, then got involved heading the ball

so, in effect, the Qatar goalie going AWOL and flapping twice in no man's land was actually a cunning plan.

AthleticoSpizz The law’s an ass

Given this sort of thing happens less often than I win the lottery* so I’m ok with the law as it stands

Including lucky dips, obviously

Fair do’s

Give us back “the referees decision is final” games.

A tiny bit less dodgy

Dion Dublin's ridiculous gags that always, always involve a sort of adolescent humour and inane laughter rub me right up the wrong way. Shearer and Lineker I find incredibly dull which may sound cruel but is true. Danny Murphy is a bit surly but at least makes the effort to illuminate things to both viewers and the hapless and likeable Chappers. One of the most interesting pundits I find to be Pomeranian-owning Jermaine Defoe who has a refreshingly natural very non-BBC way of talking and seems to me to be full of interesting say things to say about the games in question - at least to someone like me whose love for football is enormous but understanding of technical nuance is, to say the least, shite. Pat Nevin is, of course, brilliant and not just because he is mates with the Cocteau Twins and reads the Guardian.

Defoe has also made me face up to a prejudice I have which is that people who wear so much bling are kind of knobs.

For some reason the iPlayer coverage of the AUS v Den match yesterday had the R5 comms. Great for two reasons, I was working so the radio commentary meant I didn't have to watch the screen the whole time and Nevin on co-comms. He was loving it when it was getting all a bit tense. His enthusiasm for the game is great.

Actually been pleasantly surprised by Andros Townsend, enjoying his co-comms. Gets across the tactical side and still has time for a bit of joking about, him finding out the correct pronunciation of croissant the other day was quite endearing.

Always thought Nevin was intelligent until he claimed John McGinn was better than Luka Modric before the Scotland-Croatia match at the Euros.

There is a lady who I have caught brief glimpses of on BBC (alongside Drogba a couple of days back) who seems quite lovely

+1 for Shearer and Lineker both being god awful dull wastes of licence fees

+1 for Nevin and Murphy.

And hopefully Hartson will go home with the Welsh team.

Jermaine Defoe?

Anyway, the big trend I've noticed in this WC punditry has been elevated levels of bantz between the commentator and the colour guy. Obviously this is most prevalent on the light channel between the likes of John Champion and Coisty (the originators of the bit) but even the beeb is willing to fill time with drip fed tales of the antics of the guys in the hotel

I really don't mind Lineker tbh. Strides the sensible presenting, relaxed chit chat and insightfully insightful stuff as well as can be I think

Silver Fox the colour guy

Can't call them that anymore m8.

Zabaleta in the studio has been pretty good. Pochettino needs to ease up on the Just for Men.

Lineker is excellent and be a sad day when he walks away, shades of my Des Lynam feeling!

She got 188 caps for France, I suspect she knows a lot more than you.
