Ascotexgunner Trent Arnold has never impressed me as a defender. Going forward he is one of the best but he has been utterly shocking tonight. Since Van Dijk has been injured he has bang average.

I'd rather have Bertrand.

Lost the ball 38 times tonight, the most in any game this season, and was at fault for their goal

Whilst Trent isn’t the greatest at defending, he usually has the extra cover of Fabinho and Henderson ahead of him who are good at sitting in where gaps are left by Liverpool’s high positional fullbacks. Obviously, with them both playing at CB last night, there was less cover for them

Whilst I’m reading a very small minority of Liverpool fans saying “Klopp is finished” - which is ridiculous, not sure about the XI and subs yesterday. Surprised he didn’t start one young un at CB, missed the presence of Fabinho/Henderson in midfield. Never rated Chamberlain, it’s always one good performance from him followed by five average ones, and given his injury tendencies, not sure what he’s still doing there. Milner was a strange sub too, was awful when he came on

Do feel a bit for Minamino, scored the first in the 7-0 win against Palace, and set the tempo in a good performance, yet hasn’t been seen in the last three games where they’ve picked up 2 points out of 9, whilst seeing the likes of Jones, Origi, Chamberlain and Shaqiri all on ahead of him

Big game for Liverpool next, at home to United - but I suppose they’re a lot stronger at home so can see them still winning

Hendo 7 points separating top and 10th, going to be one of the closest races with more than 2 teams, for a long time I think.

Can see City getting a run of form now - which I wasn’t expecting at the start of the season

Next six games
Brighton (H)
Palace (H)
Villa (H)
WBA (A)
Sheffield United (H)
Burnley (A)

You really would expect them to pick up the majority, if not all the points here, which would swing momentum into their favour before a tough run in against the top sides

Sanguine Whilst I don't think that the Jack Stephens handball last night was a penalty - he was only six feet from the rapidly moving ball - the decision of VAR to allow it seemed to fly in the face of previous decisions we've seen for handball this season - not least the one against Gomez for handball where he was trying to pull his arm away.

You are our man for VAR Sangers.
If a review takes place say for a potential foul in the area (e.g. Bertrand on Salah) and the decision is "no foul as he played the ball", how come a corner wasn't given because Bertrand put the ball out?

Did that idiot Marriner just forget to consider that, like he gave Liverpool a corner later when the Saints defender had put the ball clearly into touch.?

No chance of that this season

It must be exciting for you to be as high as second, if you'd been better earlier this season you could really take advantage of Liverpool's poor run of form (at least it seems poor, was actually a bit shocked to hear they were unbeaten in 12 before last night)

I know it was his first start for some time but how did you think The Ox did?

I believe you are quite a fan of his and I think he could do a job but only as a winger perhaps subbing for Salah.
He has said that he feels his best position is central midfield but I think he lacks the passing accuracy to play there and isn't the greatest of tacklers.
Ironically the player he replaced as a winger at Southampton also thought of himself as better in a different position-in his case as a striker and not a winger but time has shown that Theo , like IMHO The Ox is a winger.

I have always felt that it was a 2 horse race and despite the current closing up by others I still feel that once again it will be all about Liverpool and City come the end of the season.

Agreed that Henderson should have stayed in midfield (not just an after the event comment-see my fear yesterday over set pieces) and one of the young centre-backs to have started.
I don't generally like players playing out of position whether it be right-footed left-backs or centre-backs pushed into midfield or midfielders playing centre-back and prefer sometimes players with lesser overall ability being selected for their specialist position.

All the talk early on in the season was how badly Liverpool would do without VVD but as Sangers pointed out yesterday the defensive record without him has been excellent and without him they have been at the top for months.

What I feel has contributed lately to the stutter in results is the injury to Jota.
He arrived at just the right time and produced the spark from day one, giving Klopp the option of changing or subbing the fab 3.
It worked better than anyone might have imagined and he was playing so well that Klopp accommodated him in midfield as he felt that he just couldn't leave him out.

Since his injury Liverpool have been the Liverpool that we have come to expect in thrashing Wolves and Palace but have struggled to break down the obstinate defences of WBA, Newcastle and now Southampton.
Nobody can be sure about what might have happened in any game but I do feel that at least one of those games would have yielded a win if not two, making Liverpool 4 points clear at the top.

Unfortunately he did get injured and with the fab 3 being a bit predictable of late Liverpool have dropped points.
City , Spurs and Man Utd have all had similar poor spells this season-hopefully Liverpool will be back on song against Man Utd shortly with the fragile Matip returning and the influential Henderson playing in his right position.

From a neutral's perspective this bad few games from Liverpool makes the season more interesting but cream normally reaches the top and, as posted elsewhere, I don't see beyond City or Liverpool to be champions.

Agree with that in particular, square pegs in round holes etc, always agreed with playing players in their natural position

Do think the team has concentrated more on the defensive part of the game, hence the goals slightly drying up. As Sanguine mentioned earlier on in the thread, there was perhaps a feeling of "Van Dijk will clear that up" in the last couple of seasons,

Still think Spurs are in with a shout after their poor run has seemingly come to an end. Or perhaps Villa could do a Leicester from 2016?

Not especially no. I think his constant injuries have taken their toll, I'd have Shaq ahead of him on the list of impact players, probably not a starter mind

Ox for me sits in a bucket of players like (for me) Walcott and Winks, who hit 20 years old and just seem to stop getting any better. I watched him running Liverpool ragged for Arsenal in a cup tie on Sky Classics the other day as a teenager, he barely looks the same player now.

He definitely improved after joining Liverpool but think his injury has done him in as far as improving further goes.

Henderson at centre-back again today-a shame because his drive from midfield might be missed.
Glad to see Thiago playing though and this could be the day for Shaq to play a big part.

Am looking forward to the game and feel that there will be a few goals-hopefully for the benefit of Liverpool's goal difference.

This game is a stinker.

What does Pogba actually add to Utd?

Didn't think he was that bad tbf, much better than the highly praised Fernandes.

Not a game to live in the memory and a great result for City in particular and for Leicester.

Lack of options a worry for Liverpool today, not enough game changers on there for them

Whilst people are calling for Klopp to break the front three up due to their poor form, there really isn’t much he can do

Btw United playing like a Mourinho side, let’s see if Ole is criticised the same way he is

City go top if they win their games in hand!

Bruno didn't have that bad a game...

Pogba on the right is against Robbo and Mane

...that's a lot of work he's got to do!
