Portugal keeper Rui Patricio had an absolute 'mare with this one against Israel last night. Russia look set to win Group F with Portugal in the play offs.

Always good to see first-timers appear at the World Cup, so it'd be good to see Burkina Faso and Ethiopia in. I see you've noted BF's first leg win too.

Ethiopia's kit is very disappointingly bad. It sort of has the badge on the shoulder:

Colombia qualified last night.

3rd and 4th in that table qualify and are currently Ecuador & Chile who with one game to go are both 3 points ahead of Uruguay.

Ecuador & Chile playing each other next week where a draw would obviously send them both to the World Cup. Lump on folks!

Uruguay playing the Argies so probably doesn't matter anyway

This World Cup is going to be absolutely brilliant. Nobody expects England to win so hopefully we'll see less of that related nonsense and just enjoy watching how far they can go, whilst enjoying all the other teams in the tournament.

Beat Poland and have six months of some decent performances in the PL from some of the usual suspects and I'm sure the media can whip up a "we might actually win it" frenzy.

who the hell have you known who actually thought England were going to win a tournament in the last 20 years?

The media* haven't been saying it for ages. Fans never think England are going to win any more either, so why do so many still talk as if people in England routinely believe we are the best in the world?

About the closest you get is Sky News going into a pub full of England fans and shouting "who's going to win?" and getting them to shout "England!!!!" back.

* I'll exclude Ian Wright, who'd probably tip England to win the superbowl if asked.

2006, the death of the whole Golden Generation thing. But it was definitely there, then. Believe.

Pretty sure England were hyped as realistic potential winners in 1998 and 2002 as well.

Even 2010, whilst people didn't expect them to win, they certainly expected more than the 4 pretty abject performances that were served up.

I watched England in major tournaments in 1982, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2012 (twice if you include the Olympics) and each and every time the media has hyped up England's chances and I've had friends who entirely expect England to win the whole thing.

2014 really does seem to be different in that nobody expects much at all.

98 was probably the most hyped I have known. GoLOLden generation + a near final appearance in 96 had the media convincing people we only had to turn up to win.

98 is probably my favourite WC memories as an England fan anyway. Left work at lunchtime to get to the train station in order to get to my local for the Tunisia game. Town centre at lunchtime was mayhem, queue's outside pubs, people rushing around trying to get to somewhere to watch the game. Just can't imagine that happening again.

I watched the Champions League and for two year's solid they told us that Beckham, Joe Cole, Lampard and Beckham was the best midfield in the world and that everybody rated John Terry as a defender, so we were definitely among the favourites. We were just lied to as when it came to the 2006 World Cup, we never had a chance and only Ashley Cole looked a half-decent player.

That was the best World Cup song ever. Better even than the excellent World in Motion. It deserves a Youtube link at least. Watch this, it's brilliant:
