Unpredictable comedy goalkeepers.

Full blooded 50/50 cruncher challenges when your own player/team emerges with the ball and the ref plays on.

Defenders/goalkeepers who leave the ball to run out of play only to discover that one of the oppositions players has chased it down and kept it in.

Supporters who keep singing and get behind their team even when they're getting thrashed 3-0.

Stadiums and floodlights in the winter when shrouded by fog.

One of the things I think that the Premiership has slowly eradicated is that one player miles out of his depth. You know, there's a few injuries, maybe specifically in one position, maybe an international week?

So out comes 19 year old Joe Bloggs. He'll make it as a pro, but not now. And he's almost certainly got a massive glaring hole in his skillset. Like he doesn't really like heading the ball. You can almost see the opposition winger licking his lips as he faces him for the first time.

The other extreme is the guy you've forgotten about. Usually Scandinavian. Think Leonhardsen. You know he's going to get caught in a straight sprint with someone twice as fast and get utterly, utterly rinsed.

It's all so athletic and good nowadays

1. A goalkeeper going up for a late corner and grabbing the equaliser.

Only bettered by...

2. A goalkeeper going up for a late corner which is easily cleared by the defending team who then race up the pitch to score.

Players rolling back the years - extension of Paps one about players you've forgotten about. I remember when we signed Ray Houghton, everyone said 'but he's old, slow and fat'. And he turned out to be old, slow and fat. And then in the middle of that abysmal run at the end of 97/98, we played Man City at home, won 3-0, and Houghton scored and played as if in his pomp, as if he had Whelan, McMahon and Beardsley around him.

Green Jon Motson in the snow

I had a ticket for that game, Wycombe versus Peterborough, FA Cup Round 1 in about 1992 maybe.

dizzynewheights Refs falling over

The ball hitting the corner flag and staying in

Both goalies being captain

Goalies wearing caps because of the sun

players wildly celebrating after scoring against former teams, none of this false humilty rubbish you get these days

Oh yes

jd82 The ball smashing off a rainsoaked crossbar.

Indirect freekicks inside the area - oxf*rd carnage

The ironic cheer noise when someone slices a shot well wide

The slight delay when an away team scores before the sound of their fans celebrating hits you

The communal roar after an impeccably observed minutes silence

Managers with a great touch

and oh yes.

The buzz on a match day where there are plenty of pubs to choose from within throwing distance of the stadium.

The early rounds of European Cup competitions. You might get some unheard of Welsh team getting a trip over to somewhere nice like Portugal or Austria, for instance. And you just feel pleased for them. Or a big club like Celtic getting sent to the arse end of Kazakhstan. Always causes a chuckle.

The Welsh team actually won this season!

Prestatyn beat some Latvian team and then got spelunked by a Croat team that used to be famous.

The FAC qualifying rounds and the things you learn.

There's a town called Biggleswade?
It's got two teams?
And in the same round one's travelling to Hendon and one to Finchley?

That'll do me.

Injury-time winners a la Archie.
Local rivals getting mullered in a derby.
Comebacks.
Away wins.
35-yard rockets that leave the keeper sitting in the six-yard box and staring at his back four.
Studying attendance figures for clubs at all levels for hours on end (as well as league tables).

There was the Hendon derby the other year, Hendon vs London Met

4-4-2 sometimes do articles on that sort of thing, or Prestatyn cup run 8)
