From Despair To Where? I take your point but for every thumping handed out to Croatia, there's points dropped against sides like Israel, Macedonia or Montenegro, or unconvincing performances against the likes of Andorra and Luxembourg.

Er... so hasn't Hodgson's time so far been like this ^ just without the thumpings?

Competitive results under Hodgson:

DWWLWDWDWDWDW

Look at the pattern. Omen's not good for 3 points on Tuesday.

ZacNaloen Jesus can you imagine the oxf*rd circus if Redknapp actually got the job, Nightmare.

Shudder shudder shudder

Hodgson deserved the job and should probably have had it before tbh.

True, Jordan is a tough place to get a result.

I did say that his start was inconsistent but away draws with Ukraine and Poland are not bad results in themselves, neither is a draw in Montenegro (who incidentally got 2 draws out of England the last time they met in qualifying).

Maybe failing to win at home to Ukraine is disappointing but to suggest there have been no thumpings when the wins have been by margins of 5-0, 5,-0, 8-0, 4-0 and 4-1 is somewhat wide of the mark IMO.

My point is that there are clear signs of progress under Hodgson.

Because football results always follow trivial little patterns

Maguire
From Despair To Where? I think Hodgson is making a pretty decent fist of this international management lark, not that it really comes as a great surprise. Montenegro are exactly the sort of side England would have struggled to beat previously but he's shaking the squad up a bit and not relying on the same old names and there actually seems to be a Plan B.

I do think England are a some way off seriously challenging for major titles but Hodgson has the nous to make the very most of what is available to him.

In fairness to Capello, he did qualify for 2010 fairly impressively. Lost one game (away to Ukraine) but dished out some beatings along the way (took Croatia down 9-2 on aggregate over the two games).
.

Ukraine game was a dead rubber, wasn't it?

The bizarre thing in 2010 was something went south between qualifying and the friendlies before the tournament. Japan one was during my coaching course. We sat there during our lunchbreak, in stoney faced :|

England won but it was one grim game to actually watch.
