Best/Worst Pundit

by genome » 14 Dec 2016 14:50

In light of Klopp complaining about the Neville brothers, I'm wondering who you think are the best and worst pundits.

I actually think Gary Neville is a good one, offers some good football insight, which is what you want from a pundit - not just hot air and hyperbole. There's just obviously an anti-Liverpool aura about him, unsurprisingly. But I'd say he's my best.

Worst is probably Paul Merson, the bloke can't even speak properly let alone offer any valuable information.

Honourable mentions:
Ian Wright - Just good fun.
Jeff Stelling - Not sure whether to count him as a pundit or not, I guess he isn't really, but still a legend.

Dishonourable mentions:
Owen Hargreaves - Literally everything is phenomenal, incredible or the best thing in the world.
Mark Lawrenson -

agreed on Jeff Stelling

and on Merse. But I find Phil Thompson to be even worse. They really need to shake up that Saturday panel. Keep Tiss I suppose.

Mullery was the worst ever ever ever.

As said, Sutton has come to my attention twice this week with some wonderful work. He has quite a track record in a small pond.

On the subject of Mark Lawrenson - I remember watching this live -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyvb4XXT21k

Genuinely one of the most cringey moments on TV I've ever witnessed.

Best: GNev. Didn't actually mind Hansen back in the day.

Worst: Too many to mention - Claridge, Shearer, either of the Redknapps.

Not fussed about Jamie Redknapp, don't think he's bad, don't think he's particularly good either.

Michael Owen is the worst r8ed I think, according to a large online poll

Don't mind Redknapp's punditry but find his body language intimidating, he should be shot from the waist up

I always think the Soccer Saturday mob are deliberately crap, thanks to #banter

G Neville's decent. Hansen was good. I've got a decent amount of time for Savage, he talks some bollocks and he's an arse, but he does provide some good stuff too and provides a bit of a different perspective to many. Dixon was good, but haven't seen much of him lately. I like Danny Murphy. I also have time for Jenas. I wouldn't class Stelling as a pundit but he's very likeable.

Shearer is tedious. Lawrenson is horrendous... he probably could be good if he put a bit of effort in and stopped thinking he was clever and funny. He's neither. Phil Neville's punditry could be used as a general anesthetic. Almost anyone associated with ITV are awful. Tim Dellor and Adie Williams are both poor.

Gary Birtles spouts some utter sh*te, and Gerry Armstrong is far from brilliant where La Liga is concerned. Worst by a mile is Paul "argh, me toof's fawlen aat" Merson though. Seriously bad and only really famous for introducing the term "Desmond" to proceedings.

Best - I admit to really liking Gary Neville. Where football tactics and analysis are concerned, he is genuinely insightful. People beat him up for his failed stint at Valencia but I question whether anyone will be able to succeed at the Mestalla given the internal situation there, and the impatient nature of their supporters. Give him an English club to manage and I'll put my house on him succeeding.

Last weekend they cut to Paul Merson to update on his match and he was in the middle of chewing food

I like it on the Skybet website when they use pictures of Merson next to the football bets

Agreed on Owen Hargreaves. When a team goes 1-0 they're the best team in the World ever. When they go 2-1 down they're the most shambolic team ever. I wish he'd look at the bigger picture in a 90 minute football match rather than just sensationalise for a few minutes.

Andy Hinchcliffe is also awful. He gives his opinion on a challenge, says it's a clear foul. The replay shows otherwise but he never corrects himself, he's just stubborn and sticks with his original opinion. Some other pundits do this mind.

Also, Robbie Savage. He just can't say Ibrahimovic.

Best:
Chris Sutton was good recently. Jermaine Jenas is good. Gary Neville might be the best.

Worst
Glenn Hoddle has been a right miseryguts recently, spoiling the England games almost as much as the players.

Commentator rather than pundit but Jonathan Pearce winds me up. On MOTD last night when Liverpool nearly scored a second in the first half he said "2-0 and the game would have been over" Can you not think of a match in the whole history of football that might make that a silly comment JP?

I certainly can't think of one involving Liverpool, at all.

Are we talking just TV because the best by a mile IMO is Jimmy Armfield.

On TV, Kevin Kilbane is ok, don't mind Jenas or Murphy but as a rule, I Sky+ it and skip the pundits.

Don't ever listen to pundits tbh. Rarely listen to commentators either, I quite like it with the sound off.
