Would it be good to have a player who was despised by the rest of football, but was very good, playing for England? We could become like Germany and be more likely to win things.

I think what you're more likely to see is some canny Italian, or whatever, wind him up and watch him get himself sent off like the silly petulant little child he appears to some time be. See Rooney and Ronaldo.

He might be through that phase already - it's already happened at the end of the last two seasons, so he must have learnt from it. Hopefully, the canny Italian will be spotted by the video ref and be the one to get the red card.

I wouldn't assume he has the temperament to learn from things like that.

The Guardian noticed his good performance and compare him to the Steven Gerrard that played in the 5-1 win against Germany.

I don't think this is a golden era for day-to-day Guardian sports journalism (they are so up themselves with getting the woman's manager sacked, the rest doesn't seem to matter, perhaps), but there might be a germ of a good idea here. We don't have to play Livermore as a defensive midfielder and leave good attacking players on the bench, if we play Alli in a deep midfield role for England.

Remember when Capello tried that with Wilshere? Just got endless grief about playing him as a defensive midfielder and ignored the fact he was playing him as a deep lying play maker. Thank god we don't produce players like Pirlo over here.

Wasn't that Roy Hodgson? Or did Capello try it as well? It's good to see Wilshire slowly stating to come back into things with Arsenal, long may that continue!

As for Alli, lets try and get the best from him by playing him and Kane in their best positions instead of nullifying him and turning him into a target for criticism by playing him out of position like Gerrard.

With the development of Winks, I wouldn't be surprised to see a Dier, Winks, Alli as the midfield three in the 2018 WC

Don't disagree, and I know that 'name' players aren't necessarily the key to success, as we've seen, but still, it's no Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, is it? :(

No but Dier, Winks and Alli are 23, 21 and 21 respectively. Give it a few more years.

And they'll have a great understanding of each other's game. There's simply not enough time for players to train & player together and get coached by the manager for the modern game. Especially for our fairly stupid simpletons.

I'm still not 100% convinced by Dier to be honest, but that would be one way to build a midfield base with a bit more understanding (not that they'll ever play that frequently together for Tottenham though).

Not convinced that any of them will have the bottle or talent to play starting roles at the world cup. There no iniesta, xavi or pirlo are they

fair play to him. Yet another reminder that there is a human behind the headlines and that life can be complex and messy

Yeah, was fairly obvious there was something going on behind the scenes, he just seemed to lose his talent overnight like in Space Jam

Very brave of him and I would love to see him back at the top one day.

Would love to see him going back to MK Dons as ridiculous as it sounds. I think he should go back to his roots and build himself back up for a season. Maybe work with some of the coaches who got him to where he is now. He needs to regress to progress.
