AthleticoSpizz All a bit meh to me.

Couldn’t care less if we had a whole team of gay footballers, as long as they were good footballers.

Times have changed, there is no real need for gay footballers to even have to make those massive statements to the general public these days (imho, of course).

Spot on.
Fashanu did it years ago and it's now old hat.
Nobody cares if players are born- agains, catholics, muslims, black or yellow so being gay is a non-story.

What a ridiculous exchanging of views. Fortunately the rest of the world doesn't really think like this anymore.

Apparently because of vile abuse online. Was it a hoax or not?

Thats the sort of stupid and ignorant 1960s comment that is the reason why we have a pride festival.

I would hope that he has deleted it as he will come out via his own personal account and not deleted it because it was either a hoax or felt that he couldn't go through with it.

He said he wasn't strong enough to do it.

That is the problem with using social media to manage this sort of thing, it will just attract troll after troll - you would think it would just be better to come out through more traditional means as you would think it would be easier to manage the fall-out. Easy to say as a straight guy though.

Real shame he wasn't able to go through with it, would have been great if he still came out in the face of the abuse. Would have sent a strong message.

Unbelievable.

One footballer came out 29 years ago and killed himself at least partly because of the reaction and it's old hat.

Royal Rother It’s not old hat at all.

It should be but it most definitely is not.

Gay footballers are afraid to come out because they are fearful they will be treated differently by their team mates and supporters. And they are probably dead right.

Talkshite have had phone ins where some supporters have said they would not want gay men playing for their club.

It’ll change but it needs some very brave guys to start the ball rolling.

But it is old hat.
It is now unnecessary for gays to "come out" and make a big thing about it.
Nobody cares-gay pride marches just draw attention to exhibitionists.
The law changed in the 60s, get over it.

Yes they do, Vic. That's why players are afraid to come out.

Check your facts before posting.
He didn't kill himself because of any reaction here, he killed himself because he was charged with sexual assault of a man in USA and was concerned about getting a fair trial OVER THERE.
I am wondering why you are getting so excited about this topic-if you are desperate to come out then do it-man up.

The only one having a meltdown about this subject is you Vic, you're making yourself look really silly and homophobic to a degree which I am sure isn't your intention.

Ah, here we go again. Tolerance.

Bury your head in the sand all you like Vic, if this wasn't a 'problem' then players wouldn't be afraid to come out.

Come-on, Vic, football is still a haven for toxic masculinity. If it wasn't an issue in football any more, why do players still chose to wait until they have retired before coming out?
