the amount of dead rubbers in that first round is mental (unless I have misunderstood)

once you have won maybe 3 games you are almost guaranteed a top 8 finish

As things stand today the 4 extra teams getting into the CL would be Monaco, Salzburg, Spurs & Dortmund

How so? Arsenal, Liverpool and Sevilla are all ranked higher than Dortmund by UEFA and are not currently in CL qualification spots, and Roma higher than all the rest.

Monaco (+1 for France)
FC Salzburg (high coefficient champs)
Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham (coefficient)

Liverpool and Arsenal would have to finish in a UEL/UECL place to take a UCL coefficient spot.

Ah, I see. In that case, that's a little better. BBC originally suggested it was just basically 'the two best sides who missed out' based on past rankings. At least there's a bit of science to it.

So the new convoluted Champions League will be with us from 2024. Set to feature an enlarged single group stage first up, where clubs will play 10 (TEN) matches to determine a top 8 who automatically qualify for R16, with clubs in 9th to 24th (of a 36-team league) entering play-offs to determine the other 8 qualifiers (and I'm assuming that R16 round is then seeded).

Most controversial part of the proposal set to be approved is the inclusion of two 'wildcard' spots for the highest ranked teams by UEFA coefficient who don't qualify for the competition through their league system, which will make it near impossible for the biggest clubs ever to miss out (because you can only improve or maintain your UEFA ranking by playing in European competition).

Looking forward* to seeing how UEFA ensure that each team's ten fixtures are of equal 'strength'. Will presumably be done again by UEFA rankings, which is fine if your 'best' opponent is ranked 5th or 6th, not so much if it's the top seed.

If and it's a big IF UEFA follow how the Swiss System is meant to work then for the 1st round of games you would use rankings split in some way - split the 36 into 4 pools of 9 and 1st in Pool A plays 1st in pool b etc etc.

After that winners would be paired together, as would clubs who drew and those who lost for round 2. Round 3 should see sides who won both opening games drawn together etc etc - tweaks will need to made to ensure clubs don't play each other twice (would imagine rankings will play a part here in figuring out which winner plays which winner etc). This has the potential bonus of stopping too many dead rubbers as the higher up the table you are the tougher your games should be, so the table should be pretty tight after the top 2 or 3 clubs. It should also mean that there could be little argument that the best teams qualify for the knockout stages, which will of course favour the bigger clubs.

I would imagine they will have to move away from this as they won't want to be drawing games every 2 weeks esp if fans are back in the ground but it is really the only way a Swiss system can function truly and get equal weighting

are we at the point yet where some clubs will tell UEFA to f right off and do their own thing?

Will we see a split like in darts?

Good win from Roma at Ajax yesterday - in what was beforehand probably the tie of the round

Most ties still in the balance leading up to the second leg in both the CL/EL, Dortmund City should be a juicy return - although you’d probably say Chelsea and United are through at this point in the respective competitions

Predicted it could be an English heavy finale and it still looks like that could be the case

Barcelona showing that it's incredibly easy to get Real to lose a two goal lead.

But Thomas Muller always shows his Uber technical superiority.
I would take him over those two anyday.

Think it's safe to say Pep got his management of Foden bang on. Add in Bellingham's performance over 2 legs and it's an exciting time to be an England fan.

City (again) getting the rub of the green, feel for Dortmund who have been shafted by two poor refereeing decisions

Now hope Madrid win it but can see the winner coming from the PSG City semi

Glad we have two teams remaining but hope City get beat at some point as I don't want them doing the quadruple

Until you release that Southgate is currently in charge. Maybe the next major tournament :(
