Schalke not won in the league since January 17th, 29 games ago. The German record is 31 league games without a win.

They also have €250M of debt and will be in a big mess if (when) they are relegated. One of the big clubs in Germany. 3rd biggest fan base. Heard them described before as the Bayern Munich of German football in the first half of the 20th century

To give you an idea of how bad their current form is. The record is held by Tasmania Berlin who were parachuted into the still relatively new Bundesliga to ensure there was a Berlin club present after Hertha were relegated. They were horribly out of their depth but after somehow winning their first game, they went 31 games without one before picking up their 2nd and final win. They managed 10pts from 34 games.

Obviously this has set me on a task to find a European or World 'best' - starting with England, Macclesfield of course in 2018-19 equalled Derby's 36-match winless league run of 2007-08.

Edit: Derby's run included 4 games in the Championship. Their 32-match run without a win in the PL is the worst in the top five leagues this century. If they don't win before, Schalke play 15th placed Koln at home in an effort not to equal that.

What's happened to Valencia? 4th from bottom, joint on points with 3rd bottom Elche, who have two games in hand. And only 2 points ahead of 2nd bottom Osasuna, who have one game in hand. How many go down from La Liga?

Winston in October:
Valencia are an absolute shambles so I expect them to get dragged into a relegation fight. The owner sold off all their good players for fee's below the expected amount, let loans expire, contracts run out, kept telling the fans to be patient as they would be bringing in replacements, didn't bring in a single player. Now rumoured to be trying to sell the club. Manager threatened to quit. Good times had by all.

They are in a right old mess financially. So many players left in the summer that it was said they only had 3 midfielders left in the squad. They basically moved up a bunch of academy players to the first team squad for the season. Looking to offload more players in January if rumours are to be believed.

When fans protested, the owners daughter who is involved in running the club said "some Valencia fans are scolding and cursing at my family and I. Don’t they get it? The club is ours and we can do anything we want with it, no one can say anything.” which was nice of her

Listened to a European football podcast earlier and not for the first time it was mentioned that Iago Aspas is clearly the stand out player in La Liga this season

I'll probably jinx this now, but Rangers have conceded just five league goals all season. With 12 games to go they look very well set to beat Celtic's record low of 18 goals conceded in 34 league games. They've conceded just one goal at Ibrox in the league all season. And the three goals St. Mirren scored to bizarrely knock them out of the Scottish Cup was as many as they have conceded in the league for over three months.

Sorry fam, missed that. Should've had a few quid on them to go down.

Anyone know much about Union Berlin? They were in the fifth tier as recently as 2006*, and promoted to the Bundesliga two years ago, currently in fifth place and have lost just twice in 14 league games.

On a similar timeline, this would be like Fleetwood Town now sitting 5th in the PL. Fleetwood were promoted to the fifth tier in 2007.

Bayern lose 3-2 to Monchengladbach having been 2-0 up. Means Leipzig can go top if they beat Dortmund later today

**non european alert**

Copa Libertadores (South American Champions League) semi final first legs were played this week.

Boca Juniors 0-0 Santos
River Plate 0-3 Palmeiras

Looks like there will be no final fun between River & Boca like there was in 2018

Final is at the Maracana later this month

Listened to a journalist this morning who said Palmeiras have been the favourites to win this from early on.

Always the way, these records are records for a reason I guess. I remember Macclesfield finally grinding out a win once they equalled Derby's 36-game run without one.
