Agreed, got no real time for it.

File it under xG

Trequerista is my fave position. Whatever the oxf*rd that is.

That's simple. He's a player paid way more than he's worth because of one decent season in South America who's a donkiey of a striker and not creative enough to anchor in midfield.

Am I right in saying a False No9 is a centre forward who drops deep because his midfield is shit?

It's the same as an Enganche 8)

..... many years ago I recall my Bro-I-L (RIP) describing one of his then beloved Brentford midfield cloggers as a 'Utility Player' - I asked him what he thought that meant and he came back with:

"He's as sh!t with his left foot , as he is with his right!"

I find a lot of this terminology is just reinventing the wheel. Trequerista and Enganche are basically a goalscoring central midfielder playing behind the striker.

I think utility players died off as the sub's bench expanded. When I hear utility player, I think of Jerry Williams. Was competent in a number of positions but not good enough to start in any of them.

Always rated JW for a starting place personally

In slightly more recent times, Andy Legg,, maybe Brynjar also worthy of the title ‘utility’

I think it is. Not a typical speedy striker but Harry Kane or Higuain.

Of all the Williams surely Adie was the archetypal utility.
In the days when teams were 1 to 11 he took turns in every one of them

Really? I thought false 9 meant when someone who is not a forward player plays in a number 9 role. I believed it started at Barcelona when they had all their forwards out injured so started with 6 midfielders but Fabregas essentially played as the main centre forward.

It's something that has gone on forever, but this is modern day football so everything has to have a w*nky new name as if it has just happened for the first time.

As I said, reinventing the wheel.

You're right, A false No9 is basically a deep lying centre forward/attacking midfielder.

My comment was more aimed at the suggestion that Harry Kane now being a False No9, when I think the reality is that he's just having to drop deeper to see anything of the ball.

Adie Williams played in every shirt but was essentially a CB. Jerry Williams was could play a bit in most positions so in the days of 1 sub and squads of 16-18, a utility player was an invaluable substitute and every team had one.

I trace all this nonsense talk back to the Sky Sports sponsored 'Makelele Role'. Must have baffled Frank Rijkaard who was absolutely killing it in that position only a few years earlier.

United want to spend loads on Sancho and another load on Cavani’s wages.

Hope they can both play in the back four, cos that’s where they really need the additional resources

Anyone who says "Happy Jim White Day" on social media is most likely a nonce.

Makes me LOL that Sky's main headline right now is a West Ham youngster that no one has ever heard off is joining Anderlecht .

That isn't even news.
