Speculation : Shane Long to return

by Big Foot » 18 Apr 2012 23:16

Given his relationship with Brian McDermott after Shane stayed in his family home when first moving here, I just wonder whether or not a move for Shane Long could be on the cards this summer?

Possible but WBA would want there 6 million back. Out of our price range.

I thought it was agreed that they paid well less than that in the end. Can't see it myself though if there are outstanding payments due, this could lower the price.

We should be looking forward anyway, not just trying to get the old gang back together.

Too soon into his WBA career to leave for us. Maybe in a year or two if we stay up and they don't. That's if he settles and performs consistantly at that level too!

Gylfi will cost a hell of a lot more than £6M - I believe we've enquired (both pre-Swansea move and post-Swansea move) and he's just too far out of our price range.

Shane Long to return though, we'll see.

Highly unlikely. He's done well this season and the fans have really taken to him. They could certainly ask for more than they paid us for him, and with all due respect, I'm not convinced Shane is worth that. Give him a couple of seasons and score often enough at that level then yes please, but we need someone more established.

tend to agree with the above, we need to buy abroad anyway, english based players are too expensive and you pay over the odds.

I don't think we've got much chance of picking up someone who's only recently signed for a club and is going to be in the £5m+ bracket...

I honestly don't think there's any point in even considering him. Not because I wouldnt' welcome him back, but because it just seems utterly implausible for West Brom to sell a player they;ve only just bought who's done fairly well for them. Not without a very big offer.

I think wba will have a transitional close season, and Long's been injured a bit, so will have his price. I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to come back given his love in with Brian and his appreciation that we let him move.

As for our price range, I'd expect us to go for a couple of expensive quality signings rather than pad the squad. Less of a gamble spunking 15m on Long and Sig and staying up than pissing cash away on four or five 2m signings that get us relegated.

Assuming the takeover happens, then the club will spend big I think. It's taken a miracle to get back after not doing so last time and still ending up in financial hell.

Our squad misses its 20 goal striker, so it seems obvious to me.

Don't want Long back. He was a good for a season, but was mostly shite prior to that.

Doyle on the other hand, would be welcomed back.

1848 minutes for 7 Premiership goals (264 per) in his first real season
and having injured his back and had the hear scare, 13 goal season equivalent

He would suit us down to the ground, and suit our breaking style

But as I said on the Doyle thread, it's fitting the club ethos that is crucial.

and he does

Watching him and Lita up front, away at Stoke in the Carling Cup, was enough for my view of him to be forever tainted, no matter how good he got that season.

both of them go missing too much in a season for my liking, goal wise.
wed need another striker just to score when those two arent.

id much rather see us sweeping up all the quality left in the championship than start going back to old players
