McCarthy to Liverpool

by mumbo-jumbo » 19 Apr 2013 23:12

Apparently (reporting a few dodgy rags today) Liverpool are genuinely very interested in McCarthy. This would not be too surprising considering his performance at the week end and also the fact that they need to be thinking about a possible replacement for Reina at some stage. Rogers obviously fancies him and Gerrard couldn't resist a little stroke at the end of the game on Saturday. We do know this lad had enormous potential and serious ambitions for England. Can anyone see him staying if Liverpool or similar come knocking? Would he seriously stay for another season in the Championship, even if his was the no 1 shirt? ( can't see he would stay longer than that.) He seems a very level headed young man. Adkins has been making noises about the Championship being no barrier to his England ambitions. Not sure that is quite true! I see trouble ahead.

These rumors were started about Jack Butland when Birmingham went down. A player who has made the England team. In my opinion if he doesn't improve his distribution he wont be going anywhere.

Id say its too early. He would be mad to go. He needs games as he hasn't played that much.

Think McCarthy is our best keeper at the moment, however if big money offer comes in it will test the commitment of the new Owner and his desire to play rather than warm the bench elsewhere.

Mikkel Andersen is in the wings as a very capable keeper and might be persuaded to stay on if games are available in the Championship next season.

Failing that Tom Heaton is capable and might be worth a punt with Bristol City relegated..

We have no chance of keeping McCarthy if any PL league club comes in unless we make it clear he is the no. 1 keeper. Even then if it's one of the big clubs we still couldnt.

Surely distribution is something which can far more easily be coached/learned than an inherent and instinctive goal stopping ability, which he seems to have in abundance. Will be interesting to see how he performs today with expectation so high and eyes upon him. Hope he is good but in a very understated 'other clubs please don't notice me' kind of way!

At the end of the day it will depend on how much interest there is in Federici. If there is little, then ultimately if we get offered decent money for McCarthy we'll take it. No point having 2 excellent goalkeepers in the squad if you can get >5m for one of them when there are other areas of the squad that need strengthening.

The one of them being worth over 5 million isnt Federici, Dont think we'd even get that for McCarthy tbh.

Preferred McCarthy ever since that 8 game unbeaten run he played in a few years ago, feds can pass on the gloves, McCarthy is (in my opinion) better at the moment and still has potential.

Fulham to bid £4-million for McCarthy according to The Sun this morning.

Bit more than that will be needed I think.

As with all of our players, if a PL club makes an appropriate, realistic offer for them and the player is interested, he'll be off. As long as the transfer money is re-invested, we'll be OK.

McCarthy is a very good, young keeper. There are bound to be sharks circling and I reckon that would be the case even if we were playing PL football next season.

£4m would be a joke. He's under contract, he wants and will get first team football next season, so unless we get something like £8m then everyone can politely fcuk off.

This!

On a serious note if you look at the goalkeeping market, De Gea went for £25m I haven't seen any evidence to suggest McCarthy is any worse. The fact he is ENGLISH, under contract and demanding first team football should result in an extra few £££ added on.

I'd say £12m or piss off!
