Adkins said - some of the rumours are wildly wrong and some are closer to home (paraphrased a little). I think he just means "some of the rumours are wildly wrong and some are more accurate". i.e. that Akpola is accurate and others (say Jerome) are wildly wrong...

I don't think "closer to home" means geographically, I think it is a turn of phrase meaning nearer to the point i.e. correct!

My money is on him meaning, the 2 guys on trial are close to signing, if they prove to be good enough this week. Nothing very illuminating, but that is Adkins style - he hasn't given many clues before the other players signed either

I must admit that I was thinking along the same lines as you, that the two potential transfers have been mentioned already and are not out of the blue or wild expressions of hope (I am afraid Gylfi and Rickie Lambert fall into this category, however much I would like to see them here!)
