You're a writing teacher and you don't know 'y' can function as a vowel?

Don’t you live in Wales?

A vowel is a type of sound, not a type of letter, despite what Countdown will tell you. In English, Y is usually a vowel, representing a sound like “ee” (as in “McNulty”) or “i” (“McIntyre”) as well as sometimes combining with other letters for other vowel sounds (“Doyle”, “Convey”). It’s comparatively rarely used as a consonant (“Yiadom”).

Other letters we usually call consonants can also be part of vowel sounds (the second r in “Richards” for example, or the W in “few”, or the “gh” in “throughball”). Meanwhile the school “vowels” can represent consonants (the U in “Queensley”). And when we borrow words from other languages then we use their rules (“Madejski”, “Gylfi”, “Cywka”, “Cwmbran”, “Matejovsky”).

I am not a linguist, and it’s understandable that schools don’t teach six year olds this level of detail, but here is a linguist backing me up:

https://www.spelfabet.com.au/2015/04/th ... nd-vowels/

I think this is the sort of thing that ESL speakers end up knowing better than native speakers. I’ve probably made at least two mistakes here.

Yiadom is out for a while, so he will be competing with Araruna. I'm pretty sure he has covered at CB for Crewe as well. Sensible deal with a lot of upside.

When did "Function as" become "is"

You think I don't know the word "SKY" has an "eye or aye it "i" sound on the end
or Pyx sounds like picks?

That a consonant can sometimes do the job of a vowel, doesn't make it a vowel.

You're confusing VOWEL with VOWEL-SOUND

Quote: A vowel is a particular kind of speech sound made by changing the shape of the upper vocal tract, or the area in the mouth above the tongue. [b]In English it is important to know that there is a difference between a vowel sound and a [letter] in the [alphabet].

In English there are five vowel letters in the alphabet.

A vowel is a type of sound, not a type of letter, despite what Countdown will tell you.

WRONG

Yesterday you yanked yellow Yiadom's yacht yawl. Your young Yugoslavian's Yankee Yawning, Yearling, yielding Yak, yap, yap, yap... yarding, yardstick

Plenty of Y consonants

Find me an academic source that isn’t aimed at a primary school audience that claims there are five vowels.

Vowels and consonants aren’t arbitrary categories, they are linguistic terms to do with how open your airway is when you make a sound. Letters represent these sounds.

Yes, there are words where Y is a consonant. There are more words where it is a vowel, such as the absolutely huge pile adjectival forms of nouns (“pillowy”, “chesty”, “silky”, “snowy”, “ballsy”) and most adverbs (“quickly”, “smartly”).

If you give another response like that one then I won’t bother. It was a spectacular display of revelling in petty ignorance. Ultimately this stuff isn’t really important or relevant to our lives, but I suggest taking it as an interesting lesson learned rather than simply insisting that you are right might be more productive.

Don't know how much the curriculum has changed, but when I was in primary school in the late 70's and early 80's I was definitely taught that the letter "y" can operate as a vowel in worlds such as rhythm, gym, bicycle and, appropriately enough, syllable and it is interchangeable as a vowel or consonant depending on the structure of the word.

With regards to this deal, I don’t really care if Kia is part of his representation, this sounds like exactly the sort of signing Reading should be making. Up and coming with something to prove at a higher level. To be club captain at 24, he must be doing something right.

Agree.

of course the non-vowel y can operate as a vowel.

Why (see?)

Never disputed it.

But the language used above is interesting.

" I was definitely taught that the letter "y" can operate as a vowel "

Doesn't "can operate as a vowel" imply it is NOT actually a vowel?

Do we say a-e-i-o-u can operate as vowels or do we say they ARE vowels?

I was always taught that a-e-i-o-u were "The Five Vowels" and that y could sometimes work like a vowel but was a consonant.

Quote

Written English has a 26-letter alphabet. Of these 26 letters, 20 are proper consonants and five are proper vowels. One, the letter y, can be considered either a consonant or vowel depending on usage. The proper vowels are a, e, i, o, and u.

We must remember, too, how INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT this is.

If RDG cannot get the vowel-thing right we'll be relegated.

Yawn

You do realise you are allowed to be wrong once in a while, snowball. I think I'll go with the sourced based evidence rather than the opinion on this one.

You're like the Dominic Cummings, telling us not to believe experts when it suits your arguement.

Anyway, enough.

Perry Ng, don't know much about him but seems highly regarded and worth investigating. Hopefully better than the last full back we bought from Crewe.
