FA & EFL CUP CHANGES TO COME?

by The Royal Forester » 20 Sep 2022 16:53

The Premier League clubs are due to consider (and asking?) for changes to both competitions, according to the BBC website. Among the changes are scrapping FA cup replays( from Round 3?). Allowing clubs involved in European Competitions to field under 21 teams in the EFL cup. The carrot being changes to the financial payments including extra financial help to the EFL and changes to the parachute payments, which it acknowledges gives an advantage to the regulated clubs. It will not push for the EFL cup to be done away with.
Do Nobbers think this is long overdue or think the Premier League should keep their beak out of the EFL's business? So let us have sensible discussion!

Keep their noses out of EFL business. If they're concerned about playing too many games, then ask for changes to the poxy Europa and Conference (unnecessary competition fwiw) formats. I'd also suggest they just pull out of the ELF Cup altogether - they wouldn't be missed.

I'd also like to see the winners of the EFL Cup given back their European place, which in turn makes the cup much more worth winning once again, and more PL clubs will take it seriously again also.

The EFL cup should be scrapped, its the laughing stock of all Europe. Most sides play U21 sides now down to league 1 level until at least the quarters.

Was different when it was devised, but the game has moved on and way greater levels of fitness are required to play the game now and this competition is a burden to all clubs just about.

Its not even about money, there are no gates of any size until the last 3 rounds, and even if you draw a big 6 club fans know it will be an U21 side.

The thread that this eludes to seems to be about general changes in football, whereas mine is solely for the cup competitions. However, if it is deemed best to amalgamate the two threads, I have no objection. Sorry, Winston, but I had not seen your thread before I posted this one.

I don't want to see the end of the EFL Cup, it's still a good way for teams of Prem/Champ quality to field their reserves + youngsters. Wouldn't shed a tear if it were scrapped though.

Long overdue and perhaps too little too late.

We used to talk about the magic of the cup but it's clear the premier League and European competition are top dog these days.

So true. This one time I was hitch-hiking my way across rural Romania. One driver stopped, but drove off once he realised I was English. I can only assume it was because he associates England with the EFL Cup.

Keep the FA cup replays, they are great for small clubs who can make a fortune. The EFL cup is meh, get rid of it and use the matchdays for more midweek league games

We need fewer midweek Reading games, not more.

The League Cup is actually really important to the EFL tv rights package. The games get more viewers than all EFL games combined.
