Rumour - Cesare Casadei

by morganb » 27 Jan 2023 22:47

Seen on Twitter

https://twitter.com/Luke1871_/status/16 ... jaQzQ&s=19

and I know it's the Daily Mail...

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footb ... eason.html

But hidden at the bottom of this article is -

Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei, their £12m summer signing from Inter Milan, is to join Reading on loan after this weekend.

Someone must be leaving plus it'll mean 6 loan players (or as he is only 20 he is joining the U21s?)

Those throwaway comments in the Mail are normally spot on.

He's highly rated and having another midfield option is good. Adds competition as the midfield loanees know one will likely miss out, so could see them up their levels.

Never heard of him, anyone know what sort of midfielder he is.

Edit. Wiki says…..

Rated as one of the most promising Italian talents of his generation, Casadei has been described as a well-rounded and modern midfielder, who excels both physically and technically. He can play on both sides in a three, four or five-man midfield trio, but also as an attacking midfielder, or even in the holding role. Mainly a right-footed player, he's still quite comfortable with his weaker foot, too.

Despite being quite tall and having a slight valgus deformity, he is elegant and comfortable on the ball, whether he is passing it or carrying it, while also showing good pace and coordination. Thanks to his off-the-ball movement, his intelligence and his abilities in shooting and heading, he can get himself many chances to score. Defensively, he tends to dive into tackles and press the opponents, while also using his body to duel with opponents or defend the ball.

Due to his skills, he has been compared to Massimo Ambrosini and Sergej Milinković-Savić, although he cited Nicolò Barella, Marcelo Brozović, Radja Nainggolan and Javier Zanetti as sources of inspiration.

Sounds quite a player and maybe a bit of a coup! Certainly not bad for what would be the first Italian in a Reading shirt. So who is leaving?

He’ll soon get his valgus deformity sorted out in the Championship.

So, he's a highly rated midfielder who can play anywhere in midfield... Or technically good but doesn't have a position for the pessimistic.

So not featured for Chelsea or Inter. Played in 4 Chelsea U21
Sides in the Football League Trophy, scoring once. Those games against Sutton, Chelmsford, Peterborough and Orient. So he has at least faced league opposition.

Extra option in midfield is good, but let's be honest, there is no way this lad would end up perm here. Its hard to see such a young inexperienced player displacing Hendrick, Ince or Loum. So back up, with a small chance of another loan next season...

I'd rather Laurent tbh.

Strikes me as another Tomas Esteves. Technically good and highly rated but I do wonder if he's a potentially great signing at completely the wrong time.

Does anyone know if this is the first player we’ve had with a valgus deformity?

Didn't we sign an Italian player in 1913, after our tour over there? The first Italian to play professionally in England, I think.

This guy might be a better prospect though.

You're thinking of Attilio Fresia but are you forgetting Vito Mannone?

Kelvin Abrefa was also born in Italy.

Although I believe Salvatore Bibbo is dual national British/Italian

And how the hell did I forget our 100% Italian keeper - Vito Mannone!

Do we think one of the loans will be terminated? Or any chance of making Lumpey perm now?

I stand to be corrected but I believe that the five loan player limit applies to any matchday squad named and not to the total number of loan players that can be at any club.

Seems promising enough and if he's a decent footballer then by all accounts could easily come into this side and will provide extra competition in the midfield as well.

I get the feeling he will take Fornah's place though (I don't mean that Fornah will leave, I just mean in the matchday squad) and that it means that Ejaria is close to a permanent exit or that we've agreed for Tetek to go out on loan.

Tetek is injured.
