Zurab told to find new club

by toppy » 25 Jun 2010 08:36

Weren't they supposed to be asking for too much for him just a few weeks ago?

Go get him!

As we were interested when Blackburn wanted a fee, I can't see why we wouldn't be interested now even with Griff on the cards.

Having had him here last year means we must know what kind of money he would demand so fingers crossed. Of course a player of that quality available on a free may stir up interest elsewhere.

Zurab Khizanishvili is in talks about a move to Russian club Anzhi after being told he is free to leave Blackburn Rovers for nothing.

The 28-year-old had stints on loan at Newcastle United and Reading last season after falling out of favour at Ewood Park.

Oh and why is number 15 vacant? In my opinion Zurab is trying to negotiate a pay off from Blackburn. At the moment they probably are paying him some 1m in salary and want to free this up. Reading can offer probably 300k maximum. (We can barely afford this but its a business and you could be callous and shift Henry, Davies, Mooney and free this up).

So the longer it goes to the transfer window, the tougher Zurabs agent can get about his blackburn payoff, which will make up some of the difference to his future salary. As he won't be in their 25 man squad, even if they pay most of his salary up they'll make some saving. On deadline day they'll cut a deal to pay him 500k and the Royals can swoop for their man.

Finally, you would hope a club in the war torn Caucasus wouldn't be a particularly tempting prospect, even for a long suffering Georgian.
Reading has its bad parts, but it surely beats this place - baring in mind this is the best photo they could find!

Surely we need another centre back and surely this makes it worth giving Zurab an offer that WE can afford. Blackburn certainly don't want him

I still reckon he'd take a wage cut to come here, as he'd no doubt prove invaluable over the length of a season.

There's no way he'll sign for Reading on lower money, he'll see out his mega bucks contract at Blackburn and leave on a free next season. I think we'll end up getting him on-loan on deadline day, when Blackburn realise he's not going to be sold.

Good shout scarface!

It does seem odd that Blackburn are touting him so openly and with only three centre backs we aren't taking the bait.

You have to presume that Blackburn are desperate to get rid of his wages (£15k at a complete guess) and we cannot offer more than say £7.5k (again, at a complete guess) therefore Scarface is probably spot on that a compromise of sharing the wages half and half on a seaon long loan might happen on deadline day if nothing else has happened.

I suppose the only other option is that Zurab wants first team football and we offer him lower wages (£7.5k or whatever) but over a two or three year contract because he is still only 28!?

As a regular Georgian iternational, I would expect him to want to be playing in the top division in a European country rather than drop to tier 2 permanently. A loan move sounds the more likely.

You are right except for the last bit. Why would Zurab take a 2-3 year contract on a much lower wage when he can take £15K a week for the next year and then go on a free and get £7.5K for the next 2-3 years after that.

I agree that the most likely outcome is that we will get him on a season long loan on deadline day as long as no one else gives Blackburn a better deal before then. I think that is why Brian is saying he is happy with what he has got - as RFC are (rightly IMO) prepared to pay the waiting game. I suspect that we will have other possible loan signings lined up in case the Khiz one does not happen - as I very much doubt we will risk not signing another CB.

I agree Andrew. I think McDermott is very shrewed and probably has a few options lined up knowing Zurab is a possibility. My only thought was that sitting out a season at Blackburn on £15k a week but no first team football might leave him a very unattractive option next year therefore possibly no club or even lower wages and Zurab may then be keen to get out himself, even if for lower wages. I agree though, he will know that a loan is likely and therefore the higher wages in the short term also. I would be very happy if we can loan him out for the season, I will be a bit concerned if we end up with only 3 CBs and the transfer window passes!
