Newcastle are eyeing Reading sensation Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The 20-year-old has bagged 20 goals in 38 starts in his first season and collected Reading's Player of the Year title.

Sigurdsson, an academy product, fits the bill for United boss Chris Hughton who wants to pack his squad with the top young talent.

United owner Mike Ashley is expected to release a statement this week to clarify his position at the club and his hopes for the future.

He has insisted on a transfer policy that means he young hungry stars are assembled to make their name at St James's Park, and that there won't be a massive budget.

West Brom, Bolton and PSV Eindhoven have also scouted the Icelandic midfielder.

Although it then goes on to say...

In a message to Reading fans Siguurdsson said yesterday "I've got two more years on my contract and I'm not really fussed about the things which are going on.

"I'm happy here and playing every week so I think it would be a good idea to stay here for another two seasons. I'll just turn my phone off and enjoy the summer now.

"If we start next season properly then I think we will have a great chance to get into the Premier League. I think it will be a good season next year."

Chris Hughton will keep faith in the stars who won promotion and believes they have improved and are now better equipped to survive in the top flight than during the relegation season.

So he's probably going nowhere.

It Is What It Is Is harper still on loan until his contract ends? Get him to sign back up and sell him off cheap, no hassle for him, and profit for us. If only it was that easy...

Although not confirmed its obvious with the Harper situation that we got a loan fee from Sheff Utd for him......we keep that money and not offer him a new deal, he then signs for them next season for nothing. IF we sold him then we would have to pay Arsenal 40% sell on, so doing it via the loan fee way means we make a better profit, and dont pass any on to the Arse.

That does sounds really good, denying Arse any money. You must be very upset about it.

The Independent Gylfi Sigurdsson
McCarthy has been monitoring Reading midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson and is apparently ready to make a £3m bid for the midfielder. The Icelandic international was named as Reading's player of the season for his efforts last term.

I think Gylfi will want to stay, but £3m is probably tempting for the club.

He won't go anywhere, not only because 3m is a pathetic amount of money for an outstanding player who has just signed a new long term deal here but because he's got plenty of time ahead of him and will learn so much more here than playing for a club that's going to be struggling at the wrong end of the Premiership and probably back here in the league in 2011/2012

It is good that the club's financial prudency has resulted in us not having to consider selling our main assets at low-end prices.

McCarthy seems to love Reading so it wouldn't surprise me if he bid for the entire first team squad.

Ideal I don't think Hammond will take £3M for the most important player in the team.. we'd demand much much more.

He's a great prospect, but is he really the most important player in our team? I think there's way too much hype from supporters about Gylfi. If he has another season like the last then fair enough, but i think some people are getting a little too carried away here.

For what it's worth, i believe it'll take a large sum of money, the majority of which would be paid upfront, for us to allow him to leave right now. He's already stated that he knows that he'll be playing every week for us and that he doesn't want to go and sit on a bench in the Premier League. Let's hope that is still the case.

Have you ever seen Mascherano play?

Sigurdsson is probably in our top 3 most important players purely by virtue of where he plays let alone how good he is.

The 20 goals from midfield is a bit of a misleading stat. How many were from the penalty spot? How many games did he really play in midfield? Like Ronaldo at Utd and Lampard at Chelsea, Sigurdsson wasn't really playing on the wing or in central midfield, he was playing as a supporting forward and so he should get more goals than if he were playing in a traditional midfield role.

He still had a fantastic introduction and impact on the team though, but he needs to live up to that level of performance (and further his physical development) if he's going to kick on and become the player he could be.

How many strikers score 20 goals in their first full professional season? The only other player I can think of in recent times is Charlie Austin

If that's enough for a banning then I'd have been banned a couple of hundred times already 2-0.

I'm sure some wish I had, but I've only ever had about one warning.

I'm not saying it wasn't a spectacular start to his career or that scoring 20 goals wasn't a major achievement, I'm saying the 'from midfield' bit is a bit misleading.

I don't even think the fact that 7 of his 20 goals came from the penalty spot should really detract from the achievement because you still have to put them away, and a few of them were high pressure situations too.

However, if you asked how many forwards got 13 goals in their first season you'd probably be looking at pretty different response than 20.

Funny how no one asks that when talking about lampards 20+ goals a season!

and before you say you have talked about lampard, you were talking about his position not panalties
