Inability to convert corners?

by Millsy » 26 Sep 2010 03:07

Just picking up on the observation by BBC Berks that we had 22 (or 24?) corners without scoring and was wondering what peoples'
views were.

I think it's probably ok and we're actually not too bad at corners.

Maybe the stattos can enlighten us on a reasonable goal:corner ratio?

With the likes of Harte and Mills would you have expected maybe something to come of all of that?

To be honest I'm surprised we didn't convert one, were usually alright at corners. Still, Howards delivery from corners in the games I've seen has been sublime so maybe we missed him. Last season we had corners split between him Bertrand and Sig and now we've gottthe new guy taking them and the others arnt quite in tune with Hartes style.

I'm speculating, I wasn't there.

Not true.
Near post bullet headers were Les Chappell's speciality

It would be good to know what the average stats are for scoring from corners. Personally I think we're well below that average. Yesterday we had 24 corners and nearly all of them were awful.

Harte struggled with corners yesterday, he didnt even put half of them past the first defender

Would help if Harte could get the ball over head height.

I'm sure I read somewhere that on average, once corner in 20 results in a goal, so on average, we did worse than expected.

It's just rare to get that many ina game, so you don't notice as much.

A quick search suggests it's even less than that
http://www.sunshinecoastfootball.com.au ... _Kicks.pdf

Their figure is just 2.7% of corners result in a goal.

It's interesting because we seem to cheer a lot when we get corners

That's not quite true. I seem to recall in the Steven Hunt era we had a purple patch where we scored from quite a lot of corners. I particularly remember his near post corners which were flicked on and caused mayhem - something that happened once yesterday when Jimmy (who else) did the same and the ball bounced all over the place. On balance, however, I though Harte's corners were rubbish yesterday

Something I've picked up on before. I think we should be converting more corners.

Getting a ball above head height would definitely be a good start, though perhaps we should be practising more in training the art of attacking a corner ball as well.

A couple of seasons ago we were devestating from corners, I seem to remember both our goals coming from Bikey headers in our first home game back in the Championship (Plymouth?) and we just went on from there scoring from a corner once every 2 or 3 games?!

I don't think the problem was not scoring from, it was the fact that (if my memory is correct) we didn't even get a single effort on target from one of them. In fact it was worse than that, we didn't even threaten their goal from any of them.

Ian Harte would be of much more use in the penalty area so I don't understand why he is taking the corners.......

I think Harte was finding his range yesterday, having not taken corners for us so far. He scored with a free-kick, so I'm not overly bothered that his corners weren't great.
