We have every reason to trust the RFC scouting network (of course some duds have come along but on the whole the record is decent) but I can never remember a signing making me more "huh, WTF" than this one.

(Come on Cedders, show us what you're made of!!)

Will contribute absolutely nothing, then get released on a free. Why even spend this money if we still need to square the rubican?

Pointless.

Because the stake on this gamble is really low - no transfer fee and minimal wages, so what's the risk?

Wages are still wages. Completely pointless when we need to worry about black hole's.

If the club is not breaking even or in profit with our current wage bill, then signing clowns like this isn't financially viable. Especially as a striker who most of us had written off ( church) played a blinder last game makes it even more shocking.

By the same logic we'd never have signed Doyle or Long.

They obviously see something in him and think it's worth the gamble. Sounds like you've also written this guy off.

Written him off? He's never been written on....no goals in 4 years of football as a striker.

Well we're not a charity so presumably someone must have seen something in him but blessed with absolutely no knowledge of his capabilities whatsoever, (beyond 23 games and zero goals in 4 years) it still makes me  .

A lot of young strikers can drift out of the professional game entirely for a whole, the likes of Dave Kitson, DJ Campbell and Ian Wright didn't start scoring goals at a professional level until their mid twenties.

Cannot believe the negativity behind this signing to be honest :| it's a free-transfer with a 9 month contract who was considered good enough to be at a side in the French top division.

Not expecting anything from him but can't see what we've got to lose.

Sounds worse when you say 4 years, but its only 20-odd games..........no different to Torres at the moment

Not saying it'll be a success, but the scouts' record of assessing players is way, way ahead of hobnobbers', and he'll be on the square root of bugger all in wages - just like having one more youth team player.

So why do people on here feel they know better than the scouts who'll have actually watched him?

Wages. Apparently we already have to sell a big name a season to survive, i'd rather not pay out more than we need to on wages if they aren't going to be a first teamer. Hunt, Alfie, Church, Manset, Williams, HRK and now this guy can all play up front. Ridiculous.

How do you know? he's 23 and had to move to another country. He'd be on considerably more than youth team players.

Presuming he's on say £2-3k a week, that's less than £100k over the length of his deal, hardly busting the bank :| He might even be on a pay as you play deal.

As Dirkers says, the scouts obviously see something in him.

He was a free agent so we'd not have gone for him if we didn't think the money was worth it. I can't see him being a high-earner or one in a strong-enough bargaining position to demand big money.

Interestingly, Dario Gradi had good thinks to say about him, and there's a Churchy link there :

Dario told crewealex.net: "Steve and myself had not seen Cedric play before Saturday, and he only trained with us on the Friday. It was his Football League debut and I'm sure he enjoyed it. He seemed to gain confidence as the game went on and although he didn't threaten the goal on too many occasions, he held the ball up there.

"Now we have seen him play, and we know a little bit more about what he wants to do then we will begin working with him in training. He is already doing things what he ought to be doing and his presence led to the goal.

"It is always difficult to play your first game and perhaps we missed Simon (Church) a bit up there because he has that little bit more experience than Cedric, but he won his headers and did his job for the team."

Pointless signing when we only invested in Brett Williams 9 months back who now seems further away from the first team then when he first signed.
