Friendly advice

by sheppythedog » 09 Jan 2013 20:36

Hi guys

Baggies fan comes in peace.

I'm hoping if you guys can help I'm going to the game Saturday by train and need a quick getaway after the whistle. I need to connect and the train leaves Reading station at 5.30 have I got any chance of getting back in time I know it's a nearly three miles to walk but someone said there is a designated bus? Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Gav

Think this may be the train that my son sometimes catches after the game. He leaves on the final whistle and runs back to the station - he hasn't missed it yet. Easily do-able if you are reasonably fit. There are buses (both from the stadium and along the old Basingstoke Rd) but you are at the mercy of the traffic. I will leave those who catch those buses on a regular basis to advise on average journey time.

Hi Gav,

Are you the same Gav that used to work at Autoglass?

You'll be very lucky by bus but if by some luck you can sort a taxi then you might have a chance. Not very helpful I know.

If you leave 5-10 mins early and get on the first bus on Northern Way (there are about 10 or more that all go direct to station) you should be fine. There's no way to catch full time and make it I'm afraid.

You'd easily be at the station by 5.10 if you get that first bus. As soon as its full they go.

To be honest you have a very slim chance of making that train especially given you don't know the 'routine' like a home fan would. If you're not bothered about money I'd jump into a cab. If you are worried about money then leave the game a few minutes early so you can be first in the bus queue.

By bus i find i'm always pushing it (and sometimes missing it) for a 5.45 train. To guarantee for half 5 you're going to need to leave early.

Considering this is the Madejski Stadium i'd leave 20 minutes early (10 minutes earlier than everyone else).

Leave 5 mins early to get to the first bus at the front, and you should make the train. It's 15 mins bus trip into town. First one usually sets off by 5pm.

I probably wouldn't order a taxi from the ground either as I think they block cars leaving until everyone's left by foot. You could order one from B&Q's carpark, which is a short hop from the ground 5 mins max.

I'm unfit (no good at running anymore but I do regularly walk two - six miles) and I can do the journey from the ground to the station in about 45-50 minutes. So if you can jog even half, walk the rest at a brisk pace, leave bang on the whistle (or just a few minutes early), you may well make it.

That's not very helpful is it. If you are going to go under your own power it might be worth walking to the stadium so you can judge the distance and be a bit more familiar with whichever route you choose.

You WILL need to leave at least 5 minutes early, just follow the crowds.

Isn't this something your chauffeur should be sorting out? #middleclassfamilyclub

What happened to the thread about fans leaving early? I think this thread explains it perfectly....

I reccommend if your getting a cab get that cab from the Upsidown which isn't far from the ground. At least you will cut off all traffic that way

The F1 bus goes to the railway station, but as others mention you'd need to be near the front of the queue to be sure of catching the train.

Alternatively, before the game (but after about 2 pm) look at the row of buses parked up at the stadium opposite the West Stand. See which of the F10, F11, or F12 is nearest the front of the bus queue. Catch that one at 5 pm and get off at the fire station, which is immediately after the railway bridge. Should be there by 5.15 and it's only a few minutes walk to the railway station.

I walked to the station after the Newcastle game and it took an hour. Leaving the South stand, where you'll be, is not a good start either.
