Do we really need another striker?

by marcusopp » 20 Jul 2013 17:20

Considering we are likely to be playing one up front now, and a balanced squad has two players for each position, do we really need another striker?
I accept that Le Fondre alone up front may get bullied by some center backs and Pogbrebyak hasn't really shone yet. I assume Roberts will recover at some point, then we've got Dominic Samuel, who's looked very promising. So that's four, plus HRK has a very good eye for goal, and it's his preferred position.
I voted for 'only if a freebie come along' as i really don't think we need to add anything now.

We should be looking, but we shouldn't be panic buying if there isn't the right player at the right place available at the moment. If Pog goes we should pursue it more proactively with a bigger budget, but same applies.

Of course we do. We may even need 2!!

Pogrebnyak - He is off. No question. It's just about getting the right fee.

Le Fondre - our number one striker by a country mile
Blackman - not tested at Championship level
Samuel - not tested at Championship level
Roberts - was warned 9 months ago he may never be able to play again. not likely to ever play regular football for us again

so er... yes, we need AT LEAST one more striker!

Not really, but it would be nice. I suspect we may only play one up front this season and we have plenty, as long as nobody leaves.

The poll needs another option "Only if one of the current ones leaves"....

Fair points, but it's a bit negative to assume both Blackman (who i'd forgotten about!) and Samuel will both fail at championship level.
So if Pog goes, we'll still have four guys fighting for one place.

Good point. I assume you think we need to keep five on the books (including one very young and one very old! so you could say 4). Which i agree with.

We definitely need one and maybe two. As everyone knows I don't rate the Pog in fact I'd say he is the Premier League equivalent of Mass Sarr.

One should be Hooper who we should go all out for, the other should be Phillips.

Phillips, you mean the same one that signed for Crystal palace today?

It could also be said that it's a bit of a gamble hoping they both are good enough.. We need a proven striker in IMO.

We don't have a player naturally suited to playing upfront on his own (Pogrebnyak being the most suited/fit) so yes we do.

We need a player who's either good with his back to goal or one with genuine pace to do the job really well and I don't think any of our forwards really have that in their game.

What is this thing about only playing one up front? Championships are won by scoring more and conceding less than all the other Teams. Two upfront at home and against susceptable Opposition away, One up front against strong teams away. This leaves us needing two new Strikers, one who can hold the ball up and one to replace The Pog who has no enthusiasm for this division. Rhodes, Austin, Hooper, (Sharp as a squad player) or anyone else as good.

We ALL wish to be Re-Promoted immediately, that requires the correct additions now (just like we didn't do last Season).

Depends if by 'playing 1 up front' actually means 1 or 3/4 by what the midfielders behind them do

Didn't Newcastle go back up with only one real striker and Shola Ameobi?

Surprised by how many people voted straight out "yes lets splash some cash" I would have thought there would be more bargain hunters among us!
