SPECULATION - Roger Johnson

by Binfield Royal » 11 Jun 2015 13:37

Get Reading are linking him to us as "entirely possible".

A good defender on his day but IIRC, was there not some controversy about him turning up for training pissed? I cant find anything with a quick web search but am pretty certain this was in the news at the time.

We are in need of center backs and he is without a club and is only 31. I'm guessing this might mean wages could be within our meagre budget and of course, the primary criteria - no transfer fee because we're broke (apparently).

I'd give him a chance if it were up to me (but its not...)

Thought he and Dann together were a great partnership. Both been a bit of a liability on their own, especially Johnson.

He's had a bit of an up and down career that's for sure.

I wouldn't rule him out though, but it's hard to know from the outside what his baggage is..

Apparently the turning up drunk at training was a one off after he went out to drown his sorrows after Wolves had got stuffed 4-0 or something. After the fall out from that and their relegation he and a few others were training with the kids and he made a few comments in the media about only staying at Wolves for the money or something, although I think it was just as much the fact nobody else would take on his £25k a week contract.

Was good enough as a temp fix for West Ham in the Prem season before last so I think he'd be adequate. Not a world beater but still better than Pearce. I'd take him within reasonable budget.

He sounds particularly unintelligent when speaking, not a patch on Jonjo Shelvey though

Kyle Walker is the ultimate unintelligent sounding footballer

This isn't a potential signing that excites me in any way. It's not even like he's a steady Eddie type of player.

He always strikes me as an irresponsible defender who doesn't really have a footballing brain to make up for his lack of pace.

I always remember when he was playing for West Ham, backing off Yaya Toure for about 60 yards until Toure strolled to the edge of the box to score. Granted, he won't be playing against that kind of quality, but for me his distinct lack of decisiveness in that situation could easily translate to him doing something dumb if he played for us

He was right to close the space off and not commit to the challenge and possibly let Toure have a one-on-one, but eventually you need to commit otherwise you end up crab-walking backwards all the way and allowing an easy shot to come off.

Even that small incident suggested to me the kind of player who doesn't stand up to be counted when you're up against it, but probably looks like a world beater when you're beating bottom of the league 4-0.

Bear in mind Get Reading aren't linking him to us at all.
They've got a work experience kid to take a list of out of contract defenders and guess whether they might come here.
It's as reliable as HNA, and probably less ITK.

Having said that I have no idea if he'd be any good, but wouldn't rule him out on the basis of not tackling Toure once....

MoorgateRoyal I'm ruling him out on the basis that he's shit.

With our recent record of non-Chelsea signings, that's a pretty good reason to rule him IN.

This. If ever there was a good player who turned rapidly shit, it was Roger Johnson.
Plenty of speculation as to the reason, drink often being mentioned. Really don't care why he is shit, - he just is.

He obviously had quite a purple patch as part of a good partnership at the heart of a solid and rather defensive Birmingham side and things haven't gone smoothly since then. I doubt he's lost it as spectacularly as you lot suggest.

I didn't see any of their games but Johnson played the last dozen or so games for Charlton last season and it coincided with a pretty decent run of form for them. Perhaps that's just coincidental, or perhaps he made a significant contribution.

Having said that I can't see any evidence to suggest Charlton are looking to sign him yet so who knows.

I wouldn't write him off just because he a bit of a relatively shit time in the Premier League.

I'm under the impression that he's massively shit.

That said, I could be wrong. It has happened before.

Turned up to training at Wolves drunk a couple of times. Caused numerous fallouts there. Has he got his act together? Worth the risk? We're already carrying Ferdinand.

If a signing wasn't a risk, they wouldn't be coming to us.
