What better an appointment to make than to recruit one of only two people who has proven that he can take the Royals to the top.
That is not unambitious. That is good recruiting. Hire someone with a proven track record of success. That is good decision making from the board. Nothing unambitious about it.

While we were poor in a lot of games towards the end of Brian's time with the club, I never enjoyed watching Adkins's side - it bored the pants off me. Same with most of Clarke's games.
I've longed for a return to wing play and to looking like we're at least trying to score goals.

There is precedent with many other clubs of course but people get sacked for a reason.

If nothing else this appointment should lance a festering boil which has afflicted this club since Brian was shown the door in such a shameful manner.

Since that day we've endured 2 years of suicide inducing football from Bodgkins the tactical pygmy followed by the sort of disloyalty from Clarke that I just don't believe is in Brian's DNA.

I didn't agree with the general slagging off of most names on the next manager thread as I felt some might have done a very good job but, given where we find ourselves, there's no safer punt than McDermott.

IMHO, we have the best squad in our history and even Brian's detractors must concede that he is very good at working with what he's given.

Apart from all that, I am so pleased for the man himself.

Despite his Arsenal history, Brian feels like one of our own and I can't wait to welcome him back.

Yes, it could all go pear shaped but after 3 years in the wilderness getting back to the tried and trusted "Reading Way" has to be worth a punt for the rest of the season and go from there.

Good move in the long term? Who knows, it certainly seems like an appointment based more on history than footballing reasons, however, i'd be lying if I said i didn't have a grin on my face when i saw the news. Was very disappointed when he was sacked.

Whether or not one agrees with the appointment, at least it is a manager who pretty much everybody will have no problem in getting behind and supporting to the full. Hopefully this strengthens the relationship with the fans as a lot were becoming quite disillusioned with the club for the last few years.

I wonder how many players McDermot spotted while Arsenal scout that were not quite good enough for Arsenal but would be fantastic for a club like Reading? - Likewise, Maybe we could get some Arsenal youngsters on loan if the Chelsea tap gets turned off with Clarke's departure.
