I was only 10 when Friday & Murray & co played....did this pre match drinking really happen?

I know things were different back then but pre match drinking seems to be pushing it....I always thought Charlie Hurley was quite a disciplinarian....

Can only speak as witnessed MSR, just a few years older than yourself ( local schools used to get free tickets to games back then too btw)...maybe, it was just 'apple juice Charlie' that they were downing before entering those panelled doors...and yes, players were 'normal' humans back then

I can remember my first away visit to Northampton town, and thinking what the actual @xf@rd..... is this? A wedge of open terrace to the right of one goal was where we all were, a seated stand to our right, and a covered home terrace at the other end of the pitch. The other side of us stretched the outfield of Northamptonshire cricket ground, just roped off. :( :( :( . EP felt like Wembley, compared to that.
In my view, back in those days, in comparison to our rivals, EP stood its ground. That hotch-potch of a ground in Headington, and the rusting sheds in Wiltshire and north Hampshire didn't compare. Have to confess that I was impressed with Griffin Park, (before they demolished the Royal Oak end?) Was that what it was called?

^^^ I knew it as the Brook Road end.

Real surprise they demolished it to make the ground SMALLER, that was a first for me. Flats of course.

2 world wars, 1 world cup How about me getting an autograph from Robin Friday straight after the game when he did that phenomenal turn volley goal. It was just amazing. Annoyingly I recorded it on my phone but accidentally deleted it.

you have a time machine then?

Charlie is now in his 80s and I believe is currently Reading’s oldest surviving manager. Wonder if an interview would ever be possible with him by BBC Berks or someone.

That would be an interesting interview. Great era, great times. Managed 2 of my all time greats, Steve Death and Robin Friday. With the one you were never worried if your opponents were attacking or got a penalty, with the other just pure excitement as you would never know what he would do next.

Unlike our time traveller with his video phone, I was there on that night, wondered at what we had just witnessed and although no video or pictures, the reply runs through my head still today. A magical moment in itself and a complete evening I will never forget.

Thinking your Bovril was a bit weak, then discovering the lump of solid undissolved Bovril at the bottom of the Styrofoam cup when finishing it.

Satin scarves

"Football specials". On the train, all arriving together, my favourite.

The "football league review" magazine stapled inside the programme.

Listening to a dodgy telephone commentary from a midweek away game through the speakers in the supporters club bar under the Norfolk Road stand.

Deciding to stand in the town end when realizing that there were already 3 very big Sheff weds crews in the South bank prior to kick off.

The smell of spittle in the air in the away half of The Wreck.

Light and Bitter.

Let's just pray that if one is done that it isn't by The Tilehurst End

On 31/03/1976 Robin Friday arguably scored the best goal ever scored by a Reading player. This was a good 20+ years before mobiles had camera's.

Sutekh 15000 + crammed into the South Bank for the 14th game of that winning run v Wolves, promptly followed by a return to the 5000 or so for the next home game

Yes I was there that night. Same season. Walsall away. Feb 86. Lost 6-0. Bitterly cold. I was sitting behind Branfoot shouting come on Reading we’re second best. Branfoot smiled. In truth we weren’t even third best.

And there we have the ultimate spineless gimp move. Make an attempt at some sort of "threat" and then edit your post to hide it. If you've got something to say, have the bollocks to stand by it.

Well come on then, I'm sure everyone would love to know what you think you know. I have nothing to hide.
