MATCHWATCH : Millwall (a) sponsored by Ricky Newman

by Sutekh » 21 Nov 2020 17:21

When : Wednesday 25th November 2020, 7pm
Where : The Den, London, SE16 3LN
Capacity : 20,146

Reading take their rapidly collapsing season, now full of “free gift” defending, off to London for the usual no quarter given by the home team game at Millwall.

As ever Millwall are doing quite nicely thank you very much and will be as difficult as ever to get anything from. However they have not won any of their last four in the league but then that run of four has at least seen the club pick up three draws, including two useful points at both Sheff Wed and Norwich.

Rapidly looking like a Reading reject XI, Millwall have Bod, Jake Cooper and Alex Pearce in their ranks so you can already see from where their goal supply is likely to emerge in this one though Jed Wallace and on loan Scott Malone are probably the biggest threats. That said Spurs loanee striker Troy Parrott is back from an injury which has kept him out of the season so far so could be an interesting option

Amazing that it seems injury problems aren’t really bothering many of Reading’s opponents. Millwall have youngster Billy Mitchell missing and a slight doubt over Shane Ferguson, however at least Reading’s mess of injuries seems to be easing a little with now only(!) Araruna, Swift, Yiadom and Puscas crocked, barring any after effects from Bournemouth.

Referee

Making his Reading debut, in what will be only his fifth game at Championship level in only his second season on the league list, is Leigh Doughty

Historically

This will be the 99th league game against Millwall and the 50th time Reading will have trekked across to South East London. Currently it is definitely a case of the home team ruling as Millwall have won more than half of those league games (27) to Reading's tally of just 10. There is also a tendency to concede goals like they're going out of fashion at Millwall with Reading's 38 strikes being well and truly trounced by more than double the amount (78) from Millwall. So just what you want given the current defensive malaise at Reading.

How to follow the game

  1. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  2. Ring/text a mate for updates
  3. Use an iFollow subscription
  4. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

I don’t think that will be too far away. Holmes deserves to start ahead of Esteves.
Rafael is the big call.

VP: 'Yiadom received a knock in the last game, unfortunately it's in the same place as it was with the previous injury. It's a concern'

Think I'll give this one a miss, which should mean a comfortable 0-2.

Think we’ll win this. Well turn it round soon

Millwall have pretty much nothing up front. Sounds like a horribly out of form Bodvarsson is their only fit striker

They’ve also been useless at home since lockdown 1.

Hopefully no more injuries for us so we can choose from a near full squad. No need for Aluko, Semedo, Esteves etc to start if VP doesn’t want them to. Got loads of options - Puscas back as well

A plus one at that team above

Not sure that it is the right game to change the keeper with the crosses, especially from set-pieces raining into our box and giants like Cooper and Hutchinson et al attacking the ball, brushing defenders aside..

I'm not sure it's a game to gift the opposition an easy goal or two either.

For all our recent faults we are still good at defending high crosses, out of the 16 goals conceded this season only one has been a header. and even that was knee high.

With Joao, Meite, Laurent, Morro, Moore and possibly Holmes in the side, I’d be very disappointed if we struggled vs set pieces

We should be good offensively at them as well. Well that is if we weren’t so appalling at taking them

Will be a big show of character to get a win here an get our season back on track. Don’t want to sound all doom and gloom but Bournemouth had a Fulham feeling about it. Hope it’s nots downhill from here :(
