Uke
NathStPaul When is the earliest England can play Wales? We could do with an easy game in the last 16.

There aren't many easier games available for England than Wales. Maybe Ukraine?

Westwood52 Ref rant again; OK the sending off decision was probably 50/50:but for the ref to consistently overlook yellow cards for a litany of Italian fouls, was very evident.

Yep there were plenty of fouls and only the one booking for the Italians.

Zip We did ok after Ampadu’s sending off but it was all about damage limitation. In the end a 1-0 defeat is no disaster and we will go into the last 16 with our preferred starting line up. Joe Rodon was immense.

Rodon was easily our best player. Thank god we have him at the back.
Italy look the most impressive team I've seen at this tournament. Even heir second 11 look like they had a extra gear if they needed it. Good team performance defensively, but really needless sending off meant we had to work extra hard and I wish Joe Allen would stop giving needless free kicks away.

Thought it was similar to the France game where we had 10 men and defended pretty well, and created to odd clear chance.......Bales miss was one to forget.

They haven’t been properly tested yet. Will be interesting to see how good they are when they come against a genuine contender

Italy have had a very easy group

Before this tournament started, Switzerland had won their group, Turkey were pipped by France for top spot (having taken 4 points off France) and Italy we looking decent. It should have been anything but easy. We were favourite to be bottom. Italy have also had a huge home advantage in all their games.
What has been difficult for us is we have had to play all our games away. And two of the teams have had home advantage. Even oxf*rd Scotland gets home games.

This is a good point.

Wales are having a great tournament. All the twats trying to take the piss are entirely missing the point.

England are the biggest bunch of wasters in world football. They could win this and the WC and they’d still be massive underachievers.

I think Wales could knock England out fairly comfortably if they met in the knockouts and England played like against Scotland.

England always has talent, but rarely a team or application. Just lots of disappointments.

Zip I’d like to see Joe Allen at CDM. Drop Morrell and bring in David Brooks.

Haven’t been impressed with either Allen or Morrell so far - certainly your weakest position IMO

Fully agreed. Both struggled today and against the Swiss. Morrell was terrible today.

Was it him with the dodgy pass that led to the red? Seemed to lose it time and time again

Sparse alternatives though, unless Brooks\Wilson can play central but that’ll put a lot of responsibility on the other midfielders being that attacking

Seems to be a decent balance to the Welsh side (also Scotland) even if the quality of players isn’t as obvious as the English side

Rice and Phillips, for example, don’t bring even balance to the team as too often, they’re doing too similar things. Same with Foden, Mount and Grealish. For all of Sterling’s faults, he’s the only one that tried to run in behind. Then playing Kane but not crossing it in even if the opportunity arises too. All of this points to shortfalls in management, management that can’t respond to in game situations

Wasn’t particularly buoyed by the 2018 WC. Just 1 goal in 300 minutes of knockout games that wasn’t a set piece. We looked pretty clueless without them back then and we still do now.

Very sparse when you're bringing a Man Utd youth team player on

England's performances at major tournaments never change, but the conduct of the manager does and Southgate is one to be proud of.

And it's not like there's a significantly better team out there he could have picked. Or a manager who'd do a better job.

England have had one good and one bad performance. That's pretty good by their Finals standards.

It was Ampadu himself who made the poor pass but Morrell made several poor passes and wasn’t tight enough on a Pessina for the goal. I would play Allen at CDM and bring in Brooks to play central allowing Ramsey to push forward. Morrell isn’t up to it.

I would rather them win the tournament with a shithouse manager like Joey Barton then be shit and have a manager with class

Southgate is a thoughtful man and therefore appears to the public to be a genius, when he's just a thoughtful middle class man.

In another life he'd probably be a guardian columnist or Lib Dem politician.

He only got the job because big sam honestly answered some questions about how to set up 3rd party arrangements for signing players, whilst drinking win in a pint glass.

Prior to set piece goals against mid ranking teams getting him to a WC semi final, Southgate hadnt actually achieved anything of note as a manager.

Losing to Croatia even if they did have modric and peresic wasn't a favourable outcome, player for player england should still have had the better of that side and should have found themselves in a world cup final given the extremely gentle run they found themselves in.

Its long been a concern that the number of foreign players in the PL team is holding england back, i dont agree with that , but given hiring a foreign manager appears to be out of fashion again, i suspect the lack of english managers in the PL will hold us back more.

Every player in the Italian squad has now made an appearance

Roberto Mancini never played in an international tournament and says his biggest regret was going to the 1990 WC but never coming off the bench.

Nice touch from RM there

Billy Gilmour tests positive for Covid.

Not much chance of any England player being positive at the moment
