Can you imagine a game going ahead in this country if multiple people were killed in a crush before the game?

Simmops This has genuinely been a worse tournament in quality then the women world cup

There are only six teams here ranked in FIFA's top 50, and ten ranked outside of the top 100. The average ranking of teams involved is 80, which is on a level of Israel and Iraq. So I don't know why anyone would watch the tournament expecting to be dazzled by quality. But this is a tournament for every team in Africa, to determine the best team in Africa. It is Africa's 'Euros', and should be afforded respect, even if it isn't exactly tiki taka.

Couple of excellent goals in the Morocco v Malawi match last night.
Malawi opener from 40+ yards out, spotted the keeper a little bit off his line and curled it nicely into the far corner with the keeper just getting his finger tips to it. Morocco winner was a sweet freekick right into the top corner. Lovely stuff.

Pepe the Horseman Thank god that's over.

One of the most miserable tournaments in living memory. Devoid if any charm, excitement or entertainment. That was a very fitting final.

Agreed.

And yet the pundits I’ve heard have been saying what a great tournament it’s been.

Laughable.

Seems a long time since the 90s when pundits were reckoning there would be an African winner of the World Cup soon. Its surprising how little progress seems to have been made considering the amount of African players plying their trade in the top European leagues these days.

Don't disagree with the sentiment, but it is most of the squad playing in Europe's top leagues, albeit many in France (Africa) vs. the best sides in the world comprising of those playing in England/Germany/Italy. It's still a big gap to bridge.

It's a lack of youth dvelopment actually in Africa. Promising kids are identified by European clubs at a young age and then airlifted out to be developed in academies. There are no real youth development schemes for those left behind, and there also isn't any money in coaching in Africa so all the best and most innovative coaches don't go there. Those African players who develop while still in that continent tend to do so despite the way African football is run and financed, not because of it.
