He also has a Reading connection as his grandfather was the defender Geoff Barker (below) who started at Hull but played 50 games or so under Charlie Hurley in 1975 and 1976 before being sold to Grimsby.

Yep - no nonsense centre half....played during the promotion season 75/76. Pretty sure he'd lost his hair by the time he ended up with us.

I believe he left as he couldn't afford the cost of living in the south on the club's wages. Different era then when lower league players were on the same money as the fans on the terraces....several of our players back then worked in other jobs in the afternoons to make ends meet.

I get we need to monitor budgets, but how much would a transfer fee have been? We need to build a squad over a few years which loans don't give you. If he does well with us, he'll cost more and we'll have competition. I guess the flip side is if he's shit we're not lumbered with him. But I'd like to see us taking calculated risks.

Specialist LB is going ti be key to getting some balance this season. Will give Garcia the platform to develop more in an advanced role. Also with Clarke (who I really like if he can stay fit) and Ryan should give some more options. Just hope that Kelvin E is not being moved from the left and lined up as a number 9 this year (if he stays at all)

We've got a lot of prospective LBs in the wings, so it makes sense to have short term cover while they develop.

Garcia, Clarke, Ryan... none far away. Just not there yet.

We're not going to.be able to make 10 good permanent signings to fill the huge holes we have everywhere except central midfield and now goalkeeper.
