Mick Gooding knew many of the facts from his time working for JM. Of course, it's possible that JM has changed his spots but Gooding reckons that during his time with the club the management weren't given a defined budget for players.

The management team are not given a budget for players, they merely "plead" their case each time and JM is generally supportive of what they want - mind you thats with a manager who treats any available cash like it was his own....

Agree totally.
Worrying yet necessary if we want to see this club move forward.

Given that is what JM and Sc actually said all through the summer and the build up to the Jan window, why does it come as any surprise? They have made it clear that money will be available for the 'right players' (read into that what you will), and that there is no set budget. The evidence is out there if you listen to what is being publicly stated.

Yes but the chairman needs to realise thr right players for our club come at a price - and that price is well beyond what we are prepared to pay -So we end up getting the wronguns! Fae,Cisse, Kebbe (?) Matejovski the only exception, but a 1 in 4 hit rate is pretty poor even at bargain basement level!

I'm not sure if it's down to price. A lot of our buys in the past seemed to be players that Coppell knew about. Now that we can't find players down that avenue as easily any more, we are relying on the judgement of others. Coppell may have an idea about the sort of players he needs and the qualities those players need to have, but if the scouts aren't finding the right kind of players then we end up with players like Fae, who have been watched for ages, and are highly rated by others, but don't fit at all into our team.

It will be a shame when Mr Mad goes as he has been far and away the most successful chairman in RFC's history. However he has been with us for a long time (about 20 years?) and he has recently made no secret of the fact that he is looking to sell. I would trust his judgement to choose a suitor who will provide the investment and solid foundations necessary to secure the future of the club. Having said that, the fans will have no real say on who does take over. If I were a potential investor, I would wait until Premiership security is secured before I tabled a bid, so maybe we might expect something to happen over the summer. £100m seems cheap to me for a Premiership outfit.

Getting Citi as an advisor speaks volumes to me. This infers that by going to one of the largest investment banks in the world (used to be the largest on market capitalisation), that this is going to be fairly soon. Nobody hires the top dogs, and pays top dollar, if they are not 100% serious about it, and if they want this to drag on for ages. One expects that we will be finding buyers in the next month or so, with a view to a purchase/takeover contingent upon staying in the Premiership.
I would expect matters to move fairly quickly. Citi also will not want a client with a single trade (although he holds a portfolio of businesses, what else is Mr Mad going to sell of this scale!?) on their books for a substantial period of time in the current financial climate (especially Citi who took huge losses in the Investment Banking and Retail businesses with the "credit crunch").

didn't Coppell say at the start of the season that he could quite easily spend 15-20m on a player if he wanted to, but didn't want to upset the apple cart

I wonder if the same loyalty would be reciprocated by the players should we be relegated....?

I think people would rather believe we have a tight Chairman than a manager scared of spending money.
JM has made the money available, for whatever reason Coppell hasn't spent it.

I don't think he's scared of spending the money its more a case of not wanting to upset the special element of togetherness that has brought us our success. Its been done to death but our whole has always been far greater than the quality of its individual parts. Frankly it's hard to knock it given the success this approach has brought over the past few seasons.
I suspect Coppell is well aware that it will need to change for next season but the way i see it, that process is already starting to take shape (Rosenior, Bikey & Matejovsky) and if we can secure 3 signings over the summer at a supposed higher calibre then the team will have a very different look to it than the one that started this season whilst still maintaining those particular qualities which set us apart from everyone else.
Ive no doubt whatsoever that spending 5m on a player is not a problem as far as JM is concerned (although obviously he will moan like oxf*rd to the media ). The question is are we prepared to pay the type of wage that a supposed 5m calibre player would expect?

Well hopefully that's true and this summer Coppell will spend it, but I do fall into the other category of believing that the money hasn't been available and Coppell has done what he can with what he's had.
I mean, Coppell was quoted before xmas that this club needed to adjust their budgets if we are to move forward. Why would he say that if he had plenty of money available to spend?
As you say, split opinions, and none of us know we're right or wrong.
I hope as a club, as a manager and as a chairman we have all learnt lessons this season and we rectify them in the summer, if not next season could be even worse.

Totally agree but just wish he'd started the process a few months earlier (because I'm sure we would have been closer to mid-table by now than relegation, had he done so)

The issue is the wage ceiling of £25k not the investment in the players.

I agree with you but dont you think that statement alone tells you all that is wrong with modern football. 25k a week for mediocre players in a team just about hovvering above the relegation zone and it doesn't even come close to some of those around us.
I do wonder though , how long will the likes of run of the mill players such as Lucas Neill in ordinary teams such as West ham be able to demand £55k + a week.?
