Small point but I remember listening to a podcast with the Arsenal physio and he said nobody fails a medical as that isn't want the process is about - he is simply an input into the risk analysis that forms part of any signing. As we were due to pay a fee for Santos, then the medical must have shown something that we decided was too much of a risk for the fee/wages/contract length we were about to enter into and either we or Santos/Swansea were not prepared to renegotiate.
Doesn't sound right - it allows you to assess their real level fitness (getting them to run and checking VO2 max rate) and also levels of recovery from an injury. As anyone who has had any knee injury will know you can be 'recovered' but there can be reduced flexibility etc.
The other player I can recall failing our medical was Bradley Wright-Phillips, who then went elsewhere and scored loads of goals.
Nothing is ever guaranteed

Didn't we try to bring in Asamoah Gyan under Jaap Stam but he also failed the medical? He's scored a goal every 1.9 games in his career

Swansea manager says this is still on
Meanwhile, Reading's move for Ricardo Santos is still alive, despite reports suggesting their efforts had collapsed.

"Everyone's still trying to find the best solution for everyone, still speaking, so I think that's okay," Matos added.

One report had claimed Santos had failed a medical with the Royals, but Matos claims the deal is still possible.

"No, they're still speaking, everything's still on, so let's see."

Depends on nature of issue and, presumably, how much discount we can get off the agreed fees. Doesn’t sound likely he’d be straight into the squad if he did sign though does it

I think he did. Can't remember the exact timing of that, but IIRC it was just before an Afcon too - so he would've been missing for a month that season.

Vaguely remember us withdrawing from signing Charlie Austin after a medical. Think he went to QPR and helped get them promoted.

Yes, thus the connection with “speed merchant” McIntyre.
