Guessing that's why we'd have to pay in the region of £4M as has been reported.

I also heard yesterday that we had offered £3.5 million for Mensah, so this seems to have some credibility.

Price is high but I'd still be delighted if this move comes off. Having now watched all Ghana's WC games, I think he'd be exactly the kind of defender to suit us (and the Premiership).

Don't have any info on the Whitehead deal, other than what the papers and radio have said, but he did do well last season in a very poor Sunderland side.

I posted the evening post link - I was wondering what source he heard this from yesterday... as the EP link is from today.

Exactly the same quotes as Sky Sports days ago. I reckon we'll sign at least one player in the next week though.

Where do they get the news from...icBerkshire (Reading Chronicle website) confirms Charltons interest
icBerkshire wrote:But it is Mensah who is most likely to become Reading's first summer signing.

Hmm, they print the other quotes from Mensah that everyone else has, but seem to have a scoop with this bit which nobody else picked up on. It does sound strangely familier though doesn't it. Infact, didn't Sky Sports article have tagged on the end of the quotes from Mensah (identical quotes to the ones used in the icBerkshire story) something like..
SkySports wrote:Meanwhile, key midfielder Steve Sidwell insists he would like to stay at Reading, despite having held talks with Charlton.

Manchester City are also thought to be monitoring the situation but Sidwell is hoping Reading can match the terms he has been offered to move to The Valley.

"I've spoken to Chalrton and they made me an offer," he told the Star on Sunday. "I have told Reading to try and match it because I would prefer to stay"

I didn't get this from the EP, and it was yesterday I heard it.

No, I'm not willing to share my source.

And yes, it is possible that it's not true, but I believe it is.

Of course, if the deal doesn't go through, we will probably never know.

HTH.

At least that sounds like if we match it, he'd rather join us?

The quote is also remarkably like Sidwell's comments. Duh.

I'm hoping this is a convey/Doyle transfer - ie one where we were interested for a while and finally landed him.

Although Nick Ive has ben known to scour this site on a quiet day, I do feel that we are interested in Mensah and have made a bid - you only have to look at the official site, to see that Hammond says he's stepping up activity and then there are the adverts for the SMS service

the 3.4 million figure is interesting - it hasnt been mentioned any where else

Could it be our offer was actually 3.4 million euros?

At current exchange rates that would be ~ £2.3million which I would see as a fair price for a 23 year old with World Cup experience who has recently signed a 3 year deal for £1.85 million.

Coincidentally this is also ~ $4.2 million USD

I think they mixed up Mensah and Sidwell's quotes.
