That is such a tough task - we have had so many really likeable players over the years. Just a few of those missing out - Marcus, Murty, Sidwell, Salako, Blakey.
Ivar & Bryn have to walk into any "most likeable" team on the planet.
Not to mention Linvoy Primus.

Why do some of our fans always want former players to return?

I think it would be a bad signing tbh.
He's been very injury prone (especially towards the end of his time with us) and he's been in the Saudi league (not sure about the typical standard of player and I imagine his salary won't be low).

Ever get the feeling he may want to come back? Yes wages will be good but he won’t be looking for what he earned before. He is 30 now but still good enough for league 1. Weirdly I think he might work well opposite Lane aswell and bring the best out in him.
Bring him home.

I don't doubt he might want to return, I'm doubting whether this would be a good move from our perspective. Feel we should be looking forwards, not backwards.
If he signs, I hope to be proven wrong and it's a successful signing.

Bad idea. Would spend more time in the treatment room than on the pitch.

If he is the right player, for our budget, in a position that works for the way the manager actually intends us to play, then fair enough.
If he signs and it is just because he is a player that fans liked and it is just to get people onside, then no thank you.
He scored a 5 goals in 22 apps in Saudi last season, at a goal every 282 mins. However, he only played 44% of available minutes during the season there.
His club were relegated at the end of the season, so it is very likely he will be available, probably for free even if still under contract.
Scouting video from this season in Saudi - some decent headed goals and one very tidy finish - still looks fairly strong in hold up play but no idea on the quality of opposition.

Do all club do this or is it just a Reading thing? Utterly, utterly bizarre. I mean, I'm sure there's some returns where it's worked, but struggling to think of many for any club, let alone Reading.

It worked for Billy Sharp - for both Donny and Sheffield Utd ...

If it happens, I want it announced by the Amazons or Only the Poets releasing "Return or the Yak".

If it happens, it will likely be today or tomorrow in the hope that it will boost ST sales ahead of Monday's initial deadline.

I’d have him back solely on the basis that I like the guy and don’t really like many of our current squad
Suspect he wouldn’t be particularly good though. May do a job of sorts but couldn’t see him score many

Why is it a thing to keep getting ex players back?
