The worrying thing is the two different angles that Lita and Shorey are coming from....

Lita: "I'm happy at Reading"

Shorey: "I'm a West Ham fan and flattered by their interest, we'll have to wait and see"

Newpaper talk I know and maybe nothing new from two weeks ago, I just wish RFC would sort out his contract pronto.

Except that your Shorey quote is wrong. He didn't say that he is a Wet Sham fan and the article is wrong about him being a "life-long fan" of Wet Sham.

As for us not offering him a contract yet, JEEZ! He's still in fecking South Korea!!! oxf*rd stupid media.

edit: since when does Hob Nob censor f*ck with an 'e' instead of an 'u'?

Slow news day so SSN decide to write some story about Shorey by someone with the journalistic skills of Oliver Holt

Spacey,
The fact that he is in Korea is irrelevant.
The agent will be doing the negotiations.
It could well be that the agent has authority to accept an offer from us of say £25,000 but if that is not forthcoming his instructions may be to find out what anybody else will offer and that could include West Ham.
One worry is that West Ham have sold Konchesky for a ludicrously high amount so may offer big bucks for our Nicky-I hope not as decent left backs are few and far between.

Reported 5 Million on SSN - Would this be to hard to turn down for the board?

Its just the old story repeated, west ham were rumoured to have offered £5m last time. If Reading didn't take it then they're not likely to now.

They still would need Shorey in person to sign anything!

It would be easy to turn down if Shorey wants to stay. Reading don't need the money as from all reports, they must be awash with cash having spent so little.

Shorey has been saying up til now that he likes it here and wants to stay provided the right deal can be agreed (sounds familiar???)

If Shorey says to Reading, "I think I fancy a change" then, having learned the hard way on the Sidwell saga, I suspect they would take the cash and get very busy looking for a replacement.

I am a big Shorey fan but if he wants away, maybe because of Readings dogmatic adherance to their wage structure, then we will have to get used to losing our best players to clubs willing to pay higher wages.

You can't blame a player for going if he has an offer to double his money.

£5m for Shorey? Dream on.

As BR2 says, West Ham have sold crap like Konchesky for £3.5m and also Harewood for a similar fee. They have plenty to spend.

It would take a bid in excess of £8m for us to even consider it.

It's time we started paying our players the going rate instead of trying to do things on the cheap. Shorey deserves top money and we should be in a position to pay it seeing as he's still young and is one of the most important players in the side.

But he still has two years left on his contract, surely we can still play him for another year before selling him if he wants to go.

Also hasn't Nicky said he was an Arsenal fan as a youngster? If so it rather puts the West Ham talk into the shade!

As Nicky has two years of his contract to run I doubt if he's going to be in a particular rush to finalise something now.

Still think both he and Lita will be on new deals within the next couple of months though.

What did they learn the hard way ?

It looked like we had a pretty clear idea what was going on throught the Sidwell scenario. It wasn't an 'accident' that we chose not to cash in early and there was a fairly obvious strategy in place.

Whether the same approach would be taken again I'm not sure, but then the Shorey scenario is very different.

I work in E London, and a colleague of mine subscribes to the West Ham Text Messaging service. He received a text today advising that West Ham are very interested in Shorey

I hope wages don't prove to be the motivating factor

West Ham going about things the wrong way again - no real surprise !

At what point does Trevor Brooking turn up on the BBC and say that although Reading don;t want to sell Shorey, and Shorey doesn't want to join West Ham they are 'unilaterally' signing him for a fee they will decide later ?

I would say what they learnt was not to try and keep your best players on the cheap.

At the beginning of last season, Sidwell was offered a new deal of (allegedly) £15K a week. He wanted £18K and the club said no.

By the end, they were offering him £25K a week to stay but he had already had his head turned by agents and promises of much more in wages (which he got from Chelsea).

Therefore, the lesson must be - pay your top existing players what they're worth because if not, someone else will.

That assumes :

- Sidwell was stupid and wasn;t well aware of what he might get elsewhere right at the start of the process
- That Sidwell would have accepted 18k (you may have inside knoweldge on that - I don't)
- That the initial (and final) club offer was £15k (which I doubt given the much larger sums offered to others)
- That the club should pay people whatever they want.

I'd argue the evidence over the last few seasons is that almost every player has been happy to accept new deals offered so the pay must be about right. Of course we have players like Shorey and Lita now in talks who are in a different league to people like Sidwell in terms of what they might reasonably be expected to earn and it will be interesting to see how their discussions are approached. I would expect both to be offered much more than Sidwell was, given that they are both much more important / better players in our team.

If we did that, then we'd be bankrupt! There is a wage structure for a reason.

I have it on very good authority from a reliable source that shorey is on his way. He's said to be disgusted with the lack of ambition and progress over the summer, and has said that he will be looking to join a more established club with a more secure future.

So with shorey on his way, where does that leave the team? Is golbourne ready to step up? He was quite impressive pre-season so i'm not too worried really. What are your thoughts?

he may well leave - too get more cash - and if so good luck to him I say - but "disgusted with the lack of ambition and progress over the summer" sounds like your opion and not his to me
