The local media business model has been broken for years & no-one quite knows how to fund it properly...

The lack of scrutiny on elected officials by independent local media is a timebomb waiting to go off also...

The AI isation of the Internet with short AI summaries changing click-through behaviour is going to change, if not break, the model for media (& other businesses)...

Twitter (X) turning into a far right bin fire means HNA is now the only source of gossip (both ITK & not) for me - I'm curious as to whether this has had a positive financial impact on HNA as a platform?....

(As an aside, my mobile experience of HNA is way better than via laptop - where pop up ads slow me down at every click)

Yes you're right as they have to be more careful to maintain a club relationship but they add absolutely nothing. The Tilehurst End have just done a great piece with the new media guy, why the hell isn't Earnshaw doing things like that?

He published an article on the reading chronicle site yesterday saying Ejaria signed for Oviedo. Which I posted in the ex royals thread on the 21st July he’s only a month behind…

isn't that the major issue though - monetising a hobby vs. salaried employees working for a media organisation.

I didn't get the impression that the contributors to The Tilehurst End are pay employees with targets, P&L responsibilities etc (I may be wrong)

other than paid-for subscription models, I am somewhat clueless as to how digital media generates all it's revenues - but I believe generating clicks and traffic is important... however the user experience for free use of the Reading Chronicle website is so bad that it doesn't compel me to subscribe or pay for content...

I reckon they all read this, and prob someone from the club does too. This site has a good range of fans with many years of following the team from around the country and there isn't as much of the reactionary stuff as there is on Twitter etc.

BBC Berks certainly used to read this site, remember that chap, Ollie wasn’t it? Because of him we had the BBC Berks forum added but sadly he left the BBC shortly after and as you’d expect no-one at Berks took up the mantle to continue with things - at least not overtly anyway.

Mine is completely the opposite. I've given up trying to view on my iPhone. In contrast, my virus protection suite on my PC and laptop kills off all pop ups.

What surprises me the most about Earnshaw is that he is apparently a dedicated correspondent for the Reading area. I thought that Newsquest were like Reach, employing people based in regional offices to write clickbait articles that get pushed across their whole range of titles.

What browser do you use and do you have any ad blocker plug ins?

I use Chrome with Ad Blocker plug in, and it's fine on PC, but on my phone Chrome is unbearable and you can't do plug ins, so I use the Ad Blocker browser and that’s fine.

Tim was really nice. He basically said James earnshaw is going through some really tough personal stuff at the moment and he has taken on the responsibility of protecting him. Saying it’s fine to criticise of course. But maybe not so aggressively . He said James is a really good journalist. Really talented.

Said every Thursday they go to the training ground, Tim kicks off the questions and does about 70% of them. James then does the follow up questions. All the other so called commentators are just copying their work

He said they do have information on rumours but they are not ones for publishing them, as they have a relationship to uphold with the club.

Nationals don’t care, which is why they seem to come out with the scoops before the locals do. as they have no relationship with the club and don’t care about any damage it might cause or who they piss off.

I asked him about couhig calling out Tim in the build up to the takeover and how the relationship between the bbc and the club must be strained. He said no, everything is fine and he has a closer relationship with the club and Noel than at any point since McDermott era.

I asked him about losing the rights to do the Royals Tv commentary and he said it was a blessing. saying first and foremost he’s doing radio commentary. TV commentary is different, he often forgets his commentary is being broadcast on the TV, so it didn’t always come across very well for people watching the game, as opposed to those listening on the radio. And in fact he said it was unusual to have the bbc commenting on the club TV . 99% of clubs do it in house

I mentioned the lack of post match , match reports and back in the day we used to have double page spreads in the local newspapers on the games and how our previous reporters like Russell kempson Clive Baskerville and Charles watts used to do stuff like this. He agreed said it’s tragic we don’t have that sort of thing any more but that’s the way digital media has gone. The club miss is and are considering doing something about it. But he didn’t go into details.

Oh and Lincoln away was an example of how local media is dying as it was the first time in 25 years he’s been commentating on Reading that there wasn’t a single other journalist for Reading at the game. Just him.
