Reading Start Season Home Against Peterborough

22 June 2023
By Hob Nob Anyone?

Reading's fixtures for the new 2023/2024 League One campaign have been released, and the Royals will kick-off the new season at home against Peterborough on Saturday 5 August. The new fixture list really does hammer home Reading's relegation with August seeing the Royals also play Port Vale (away), Cheltenham (home), Stevenage (home) and Exeter City (away).

Boxing Day sees the return trip to Peterborough and New Years Day the Royals will play at home to Exeter City.

Reading will of course get to play Oxford United again in League football this season. Oxford visit The Select Car Leasing Stadium on Saturday 14 October. Our trip to the Kassam Stadium, which is sure to be a sell out, is on Saturday 3 February.

Reading finish the 2023/2024 season with a home match against Blackpool on Saturday 27 April. Who knows where Reading will find themselves in the League One table at that stage of the season?

If we have a team who can actually play in them, the League 1 fixtures come out tomorrow however, first draw of the season has already taken place as we know 2 of our 3 opponents in the Papa Johns Trophy. We will in Group G and will play:
Swindon

Exeter

U21 side to be announced.
So we are scheduled to face Oxford and Swindon in competitive games for the first time in god knows how long.

Hopefully we're away to Swindon. Can't imagine how few would turn up if we played them at home.

Probably start off at home to Wigan and our kids get spanked 4-0. At least if that happens there finally might be a proper protest.

Lets face it, we're a bit of a mess at present and all we need now is to announce "Billy Smart" as our new sponsor :D :D however, I'm 55yrs old now and been following Reading since 1979, I've just seen the Pizza Cup draw and we get to play against Swindon again, plus we play Oxford in the league as well as THE "Gas Heads" and Exeter again.
The circus that is Reading Fc hopefully will become a distant memory once the football begins, and i for one am actually looking more forward to this since more than any season i can think of in the past ten years!!
Maybe its just reminiscing about the good ole days at Elm Park, but those days were fun and i loved nothing better than getting up on a Saturday and looking forward to getting to Elm Park and enjoying a great day out, win or lose!!
Real football is about enjoying the game with your mates, having a few beers and a bit of banter with the opposition fans. Non league football since COVID has seen a real boom in attendances and support, and I'm sure its because grass roots football is as pure as it gets!! No agents, no vast sums of money, just football played as it should be.
Enjoy some new stadiums, enjoy the banter with some new fans and maybe we can win a few more games and bring back the feel good factor :D

I predict:
First game: Wigan (H)

Second game: Bolton (A)

Boxing Day: Exeter (A)

Last game: Shrewsbury (A)

The first month of the season really drives home how depressing it all is.

Yeah, I was just thinking the same. Just a massive :| about every single fixture listed.

Normally you'd look at that and think - cool 3 home games in August, really good chance to start quickly - but without knowing what our team will be, it's just games.
4 of our last 5 away games are Derby, Bolton, Barnsley and Wigan - which is likely to be tough.
Bit annoyed Port Vale away is so early as will have been visiting family in Stoke just a few days earlier and was hoping to be able to coincide a trip with that later in the year.

We have Wigan 3 times - is that because we both get the chance to get some points back?

  Winston Biscuit

» 22 Jun 2023 09:08

opener against a team who will push hard for top 6 then 4 games against teams you would expect to not be pushing for promotion at all
pretty reasonable opening month that!

  paultheroyal

» 22 Jun 2023 09:09

First game granted - as for the rest, not a chance if we have any form of expectations - you would take that all day long.

Tough opening fixture, but at least we're at home. I hope we've got some bargain signings lined up!

Been gifted a decent start to the season. Toughest months on paper look to be April and December.
