Re: England - the future....

I do rate Declan Rice but England may be a step up too high for him. He’s better at regaining possession and doing a simple pass. Not really needed in an England team to be fair Sorry but what? It really is needed. I think winning Euro 2020 or WC 2022 would be hard in any circumstances given there ...

Re: Manager v luck etc

Once we've got that out of the way, there's enough data out there to be able to estimate the contributions of skill and of luck to football matches. I think I've got a decent book that goes into it, explains how it comes to the answer. Give me a day. Well, luck of course plays a part, there’s no de...

Re: Manager v luck etc

Well, luck of course plays a part, there’s no denying that. Goalkeeper errors, bad referee decisions, ricochets etc etc... But I just cannot possibly see how it can correspond to explaining how well/poorly a team does over 46 games If you can provide the data to reject that claim, then I’ll concede...

Re: Manager v luck etc

Luck can not explain a teams fortune/misfortune over a season. Stop you there. It depends - solely - on whether the length of the season is enough for the games played to be a decent, statistically relevant sample. Once we've got that out of the way, there's enough data out there to be able to esti...

Re: Manager v luck etc

Football is stochastic, so yes, luck does play a part. Even on the simple fact that you play teams one at a time and can get runs of solid teams, runs of mediocre teams, etc.

However, in the long term, managers or management structures can clearly make a significant difference. Key bit is long term.

My related rabbit hole was Frank McAvennie - why did it all go south in 1992?

Drugs.

Lots and lots of drugs.

I would doubt it'd be something as irrelevant as a player - boardroom issues much more likely, no?

Re: BFTG Bristol

Teams simply wouldn't do zonal marking if there was no advantage. Where man-to-man marking does have a massive advantage is in the lower leagues - teams have less preparation time of a less focused nature, they have less able or less fit players, and its an easier job to communicate. Set pieces all ...
