Re: European Super League

Christ Gary Neville is spitting feathers isn`t he. Whilst holding a Sky Sports Microphone. The hypocrisy is mind boggling. This is an enormous false equivalence. Neville spoke absolute sense and was entitled to. Working for a broadcaster who's money has helped transform the Premier League (for both...

Re: European Super League

Haven't FIFA already said players in a super league would be ineligible for the world cup? Doesn't this kill the idea in its tracks; what world class player would want to rule themselves out of the world cup? It's a negotiation threat, though not sure what for given the compromises the bigger clubs ...

Re: Rival Watch

Looking at the top 8, it's 3 relegated sides, 3 playoff losers, us and Barnsley. Is it just becoming more stratified and harder to crash the top end of the league?

Re: Bowen v. Paunović

I'm sick of people discounting those first 8 games. They happened when he had joined the club in chaotic circumstances and he deserves so much credit. What's Coppell's record in 05/06 like if we choose to discount the 33 games unbeaten?

Re: Bowen v. Paunović

Bowen did a great job, but I never seriously thought he would have us fighting at the top of the table. I could see it happening under Pauno. Just needs a bit more tactical awareness and better use of subs, which may improve once he has better options on the bench than Semedo, Aluko and Baldock (his...

Re: Champions League/Europa League 2020/21

Think it's safe to say Pep got his management of Foden bang on. Add in Bellingham's performance over 2 legs and it's an exciting time to be an England fan.

Re: Finances

I wonder what the deal is with Laurent's wages. We signed him on a cheap 2 year deal, and he surely commands a better wage now or we may lose him on a free (he has form in this area).

Hopefully there is enough FFP wiggle room to sign him up for 3 years or so.

Re: Finances

https://m.dw.com/en/chinas-communist-party-forcing-investors-to-pull-money-out-of-european-football/a-57171818 Finances could be about to become a whole lot more complicated. Is a lot of the money coming from Dai Xu Lai who is also a British national? Would likely mean we can skirt round any Chines...

Re: Finances

Is it fair to say FFP has failed then, if teams trying to break even are likely to get relegated? Basically there needs to be a way to bring the market for players back under control, and that is nigh on impossible when the resources in the PL are so great that clubs will bet the house trying to get...

Re: Finances

Is any player in our squad worth more than £15k p/w? I'd try to make that a ceiling, and if a better resourced club wants to pay them more money then they're welcome to if they can afford a fair transfer fee. Some websites say the average Championship wage is c. £8.5k, others say £25.5k which is qui...

Re: Finances

The thing that's important to remember, is that none of this should be a surprise to the club or authorities. And a club who sack their CEO and cooperated with soft embargos should not be punished for the effects of the sacked CEO's tenure 2 years after he was sacked. There's very little we could h...

Re: Finances

The Championship is a truly bonkers league, our spending isn't even particularly high for a club going for promotion - I think our average salary is probably still outside the top 6 this season. It puts things into perspective. The only way of getting promoted is to 1. Constantly spend high amounts...

Re: Finances

3 big points for me: 1) We have surely breached FFP now? I know not all losses count (e.g. academy running costs), but we have c.£85m operating losses over 2 years. I don't see how we can be within the limits. 2) These are for 19/20 season, so still have a lot of big wages for the likes of Gunter an...

Re: Where do we go from here 21/22 season?

I think the corner has been turned by the club. The team is likeable and committed to the cause, we seem to be making better recruitment decisions and don't appear as dysfunctional since Gourlay left (admittedly the way the Bowen/Pauno swap was handled was a shit show). The owners are loaded and see...

Re: Opposition fans back from the game

No problem with Watford fans generally. See them pretty much like ourselves following a provincial club that’s had a bit but not really all that much success down the years and are fairly used to being put through the mill by the club. Agreed. I've lived within 10 miles of Vicarage Road for many ye...

Re: The ethics of following a 2nd club

There are certain teams that I look for their results and want them to do well but never at the expense of Reading, for example: Lincoln - went to uni there Plymouth - want them to be in the same league as Reading as it a a cracking away day My wife has a lot of family in Plymouth so I go there fai...

Re: The run in.

Any idea what the most points ever to miss out in the play-offs is? Since we got promoted nearly 20 years ago only two teams have occupied the last play-off place on more than 75 points, Ipswich on 78 points and Fulham on 80 when we beat them. Leicester even did it on 68 when we were last in the PL...

Re: Rival Watch

Funny really, 24 hours ago you'd have said Watford away is one of the hardest games left and defeat is not unexpected. But now we have lost, the playoffs seem 5 times further away. We basically need 10 or 12 points from 5 games, including a trip to Norwich, to overtake Barnsley or Bournemouth. Possi...

Re: The run in.

This is probably the kiss of death for my Last-Six Games Predictions but my first two were correct scores. I have us finishing on 78 but if we miss that points-total, most likely (*I* think) is the Luton game, which would be typical Reading. If we miss out, Joao will probably get a hat-trick v Hudd...

The ethics of following a 2nd club

So, the other evening in a friend's garden, we were discussing things we're looking forward once the world opens up again. Top of the list for me was live football in 21/22, where hopefully things have got so good places can sell out again. Reading away games will take precedent, with trips to Sheff...
