Re: Another nostalgia thread

It was against Doncaster at Elm Park in the 78-79 promotion season. Always thought it was Ollie Kearns but having read the earlier post concerning this match might have to concede that it was Richie Bowman. If I remember correctly five members of that team scored double figures that season and the b...

Re: Paul Turner Reading physio 1994- 2001

Really nice bloke, watched him training with the first team at the Mad Stad one pre-season and he was as fit as most of the players, so very sad to hear of his illness.
Would happily support any fund raising activities which might benefit him.

All the best Paul.

Re: RFC claims to fame

Gary Peters winked at my Mum during the Lincoln away match 1985-86 (13th consecutive win)

I met Jimmy Quinn by the perfume counter in Debenhams in Swindon the day after he gota brace against Derby in the League Cup 1996ish (I didn't hide!)

I've seen Jerry Williams and Neil Smillie at more than a few games in recent seasons. Although not regulars have also spotted Trevor Senior and Steve Hetzke in West Upper

Re: Spotted - Paul Black

In an echo of Athletico Spizz's post on this subject I had the pleasure of standing next to Paul Black on the terrace at Birmingham in 1990 whilst he was spouting his stupid pro IRA songs. As a seviceman myself at the time who had served in Northern Ireland, I found this particularly annoying and pr...

Re: Ex players and managers you still hold a grudge over?

Michael Meaker - the make-weight of the Simon Osbourn to QPR transfer. The most inept footballer I've ever seen in a Reading shirt. A winger(!) that could not beat a fullback. I enjoyed watching his rapid demise into a non-league player, a level he should never have left. Also Carl Asaba. He scored ...

Re: Did anyone go to the Genoa friendly??

I was at this one too, it was a week or so after we'd lifted the Division 2 Championship trophy in '94 and after a season of watching us beat allcomers home and away it was slightly surreal seeing us get tonked on our own patch! Their centre-forward, Thomas Shuravy had starred in the 1990 World Cup ...

Re: Did anyone go to Stuart Beavons testimonial at Elm Park?

I was there. It was a bitterly cold tuesday night around 1990/91 and I stood on the Tilehurst End terrace. I remember a pretty awful game between the current Reading side and a team of 'legends'. The crowd can only have been a couple of thousand, hardly a suitable tribute to a real Reading stalwart....

For nearly nineteen years that day at Wembley has been the greatest day of my life. The way we played and the way we ripped apart a very good Luton team was the stuff that dreams are made of, particularly considering the decidedly average form in the league that season. The last couple of seasons ha...

FAO Shaka's Shorts......... Paul Canoville was a permanent signing by Ian Branfoot. In the region of £60,000 I believe which was quite a lot at the time. He lit Elm Park up for a tragically brief spell before being nobbled by Dave Swindlehurst on a cold midweek evening up at Sunderland. Don't think...

Up yours Robert Maxwell!!!

Twenty three years ago Fatboy Maxwell tried to merge his shabby little football club with my beloved Reading. Overwhelming local support meant that he was eventually defeated and the two clubs retained their individual identities. This saturday as we host Manchester United in the Premier League Oxfo...
