Behindu Newcastle and West Ham aren;t going to win the league and probably aren;t much better cup bets than us. However given that these days it is only the top 4 who seem to have a chance of winning even the cups it's a bit irrelevant whether you call yourself a 'cup side'. The top 4 have by far the best chance of cup glory, everyone else shares a slim chance, and our share of that is bigger than it's been for 80 years !

Not sure I agree with that, but lets suppose I do. Lets further suppose that our Nicky is indeed entertaining thoughts of leaving RFC and going to Newcastle or West Ham.

Why, in your mind, would he do so? Would it be just for the money then? Do we have another 'greedy bollox' on our hands?

Didn't they win something for being the last remaining survivor in the UEFA Cup to have made it from the Intertoto cup - or it maybe that was Blackburn or maybe I'm having a bit of a senior moment.

I do realise, however, that this probably doesn't count as a major trophy.

Do you think Big Sam would be satisfied with such a prestigious trophy ?

they were one of several teams that "won" a (2 leg?) prequalification tournament for the uefa cup

sorry but I don't consider that a trophy

And they were the only team out of those who received the trophy.

What are you two banging on about.

There is no doubt that Newcastle were the sole 'winners' of the InterToto cup this season.

I have also made it quite clear what I think about it with the use of 'won'.

11 Clubs qualify from the Intertoto cup, the winner is the team that is the last to be knocked out.

So if Newcastle had won the UEFA cup they would be both the UEFA and Intertoto champions.

11 teams qualified and Newcastle 'won' it as they got further in the Uefa cup than the other 10.

It really depends how you class "winner".

In previous years there were 3 winners of the intertoto cup

this year its 11

http://www.uefa.com/competitions/intert ... index.html

The format of the UEFA Intertoto Cup changed for the 2006/07 season with three rounds now played instead of the previous five. The eleven victorious sides from the UEFA Intertoto Cup third round advance to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup, which replaces the old system where the winners of three finals all progressed into the UEFA Cup first round.

Please listen to (er, read the posts of) papereyes. He is absolutely correct that Newcastle were presented with the Intertoto Cup for progressing furthest in the UEFA Cup. The fact that 11 clubs qualified from the damn thing is a bit of a sideline in this case.

Look, you're wrong.

In the past, they awarded three trophies.

This season, they awarded one. To Newcastle.

Its not hard and its still a ridiculous tournament!
